Netgear R6250-100PES AC1600 Smart Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (USB 3.0, Beamforming +) black (accessories)

Customer Review

I have first written a very negative review because I was very disappointed with (apparently my copy of) R6250. Originally written opinion I have down just once to stand, the course can be read also in the comments.
I then bought two copies of R6200 for approximately the same price as the R6250 has cost. Since Amazon here for both - but at least priced very different - allowing products only a review, the positive experience both in the R6200. I think the extra cost for R6250 definitely not worth it. The putative wireless speed explosion on 1600MBit / s happening only on paper and is a classic marketing ploy. The R6200 is felt with any device that supports 5 GHz, as fast as the R6250. The R6200 is available in two variants (R6200 and R6200v2), I bought two pieces in one order at Amazon and receive such (v1) and such (v2). The most obvious difference is that v2 is of compact dimensions and has the USB3.0. I use a as pure wireless access point and a router as. There are two functions here in the reviews already good evidence (eg Ethernet connection of the access point via the WAN socket etc.).

On the positive side for me the easy setup, the speed, the reliability in continuous operation, the successful German localization of the Admin interface and their clarity and the use as Access Point with Gigabit Switch.

Not so great I find details in the user interface: it is slow in some places and takes plenty of time to apply changes [the loading bar annoying], you can not interrupt directly to the Home screen, Internet connection or produce (which costs although only was carried out immediately, but would not be so) and there are no indications in some places, such as that a restart is required, or an action successful (for example, password changes). In addition, more detailed help is only available online, which is not very helpful when you're just having problems with the connection). For reasonably experienced users as well as the tooltips should be enough, with which the surface is also offline quite well documented. Overall, more than a bit disturbing, but not critical - and you will not be confronted with the surface luckily day, because the little box run with me as I said also in continuous operation without problems.

Other peripheral criticisms for me personally the impossibility for wall mounting (I made me a wall mount) and some strange behavior (s. Comments), although not really make use principle in question.

In short, I am satisfied with the R6200 and R6250 which would anytime prefer again.

* Old review for R6250 *
I'm going to maybe stoned by self-proclaimed experts for this review, but sorry, the product is simply lousy. I have in the household 6 PCs (Mac / Win), 3 tablets and 6 mobile phones, along with multiple NAS and network printers. And for many years various routers, switches and wireless APs in use. I can actually set up home networks. I wanted my old TP-Link TL-WR941ND router simply replace with a faster model with USB 3.0 interface and Gigabit Lan.

The device is not necessarily intuitive (and the GUI annoying by long response times and occasional crashes), but for experienced users not really complicated, it went largely without manual. And before me the Netgear Amazon Support with unqualified demands annoying - yes, I updated the firmware. More than v1.0.1.84 is currently not as stable release available.

The range is not greater than with my old Wireless-N standard router, regardless of which band (yes, two different SSIDs I have forgiven). So no hope that the part now suddenly a bunk achieved more than older devices. The wireless transmission power is anyway (legally dependent) quite limited in Germany, so that one should not expect miracles just because change standards. The compounds were at least in the vicinity of the router (in the peripheral areas of the reception not) significantly faster (at least when they were, see below), which was positive.

The real disillusionment:
When connecting the USB drive to the router only once suspended completely. Nothing was more. Neither WAN connection still login to the admin interface. First switching on and off has (after some boot time) brought him back to life. Then everything went again - for the time being. After a short time "stuck" then the WiFi for some reason. I have no absolutely Internet connection get more (no matter what device), although in the admin interface, the Internet connection in a friendly green "connected" reported. The connection also was still possible via LAN. Only a restart of the router managed Remedy. At least temporarily. Because the 2.4 GHz band soon broke down again. The devices with the 5 GHz band to connect to continue working. Great thing, because the 5GHz band then disappeared in the meantime very same time, so that the device automatically falling back on the 2.4 GHz band, to the yes (for whatever reason) an internet connection was just nil. A win-notebook and an Android phone, I had to use, gave up at the same time, represent a Web page. A look at the wireless settings told me that the 5GHz wireless as I said was no longer there and the wireless was on the 2.4 GHz band still present (hence the switch), but this was precisely indisposed, what the Internet was concerned. After I had the WLANs persuaded to join in again, I again tried to connect a WD MyBook 3.0 via USB. Under "Advanced - USB memory" again did not show up on the board, however. Clicking "Edit" just threw the error message "No Hard Drive '. Unhelpful. And fundamentally wrong. At least I can see the disk, the power supply, the cable - and the hard drive LED also signaled that it still twitches. Only the router will not hear of it. Quick research on the internet - of course, a well-known phenomenon. Standard response of the Netgear support: "Update your firmware" - Haha. Get lost. Some have had success by trying out the panels from different manufacturers. I only WD drives in the house (some of them), I certainly will not buy on suspicion now drives from other manufacturers, so they work with the fastidious router together - how stupid is that?

Add to that a few small annoyances annoying like that come after making settings of the router sometimes a (laaangsamen) loading bar displays until the settings have been applied and sometimes (without is previously noted) is started again. I can see a, this is due to, for example, if you change the IP address, but that no reference is possibly annoying at functions where it is not so obvious - like special cases (eg if you still besides a download run or if you have the do not actually have to do now, but if you know in advance that the box reboots after setting this would just push the end), but a short note next to the function ("Requires restart") would already help. In addition, you have to in between felt a dozen times back Register (not so bad, because the browser so stores the password and you the login window simply can click away? - But what's that supposed to Why is because constantly flutes the Session) ,

From all this strange behavior I unfortunately felt reminiscent of earlier days when I have had similar experiences with Netgear devices - with the RP614 v2 and the 634U which also like the old plug out connector needed pure game to play to work. At that time I had actually made me to deal only with devices with sophisticated firmware. The many positive reviews have again driven me into the clutches of Netgear, but that was obviously a mistake. So a botch.

The whole strange behavior might again an example illustrates:
The default password is "password". I want to change it under "Advanced" - "Administration" (yeah, right, not under the menu item "security", but under "Administration") - "Set Password". I have registered as old password "password" and a new my password. Result: Error Message: "The old password is incorrect". Consecutively (one can indeed times make a mistake) with the same result. Process again repeated as old password but my new registered - lo and behold, the page reloads without an error message. And actually worked the new application on the Admin interface then only with the new password. A positive message because of "Your password has been changed successfully" does not exist but, but the password page is called simply without feedback new again. So an amateurish programmed workflow. What is the irritating error message in between if the password change was made anyway? In fact, the password has probably changed very first time on the new, but a qualified feedback did not come easy. And when you enter the Internet access under "Internet", then there is the "test" and "performing" buttons. After eternally long felt the configuration page plunges you up times. An indication of whether the test or the connection to the Internet has worked at all, there is not on this page, on which you must enter the access, of course. For this you have only to go home, which then displays a status (after a reboot, because as I said the crash on my page after clicking on one of the buttons regularly). The TP Link router that I'm going back to operation has, directly on the home page a "Connect" button, if the connection is just broken. I know all this is not really important, but symptomatic of a lousy programmed firmware.

Oh, on "documentation" or "Frequently asked questions about the router 'should not necessarily click when you are traveling with the Part. For me, the links are in any case quite useless since my devices more offline than online are so - and this links to the Internet. The local help can only be found under the "Help Center" at the bottom of each settings page. Properly structured, searchable and reasonable but this is not, but that's just such a thing as a short description of how to distinguish them from other (clearly more performant and more logical Admin surfaces here knows).
Unfortunately, all my image of Netgear confirmed again. Anyway, the part goes back.
