Hello, I Must Be Going (1982) [Vinyl] (Vinyl)

Customer Review

Phil Collins to like these days may not be the coolest thing in the world, but for his second solo album in 1982 I would like to take up the cudgels anyway. Commercially, it was not one of his most successful record. With the cover version of the old Supremes Motown hits You Can not Hurry Love, the plate had to be charged only one hit and was also totgedudelt. The rest of the album sounds it and perhaps because still pretty fresh. The plate is not as ironed and on security produced as the successor to No Jacket Required and But Seriously. His social conscience had not yet been discovered here Collins.

In Hello ... he still had the courage to experiment. With I Can not Believe It's True and It Do not Matter To Me While there is the typical Collins-uptempo songs with great horns. The rest of the album, however, is different.
The album begins with the percussive I Do not Care Anymore, which continues to increase in the course until the drums thunder, Collins screams this is the soul from the body. I do not know who was the addressee of the song. Collins had at that time, at least just his first divorce behind him.
The bombast of Do You Know Do Care is thematically in a similar direction. Again he lets his lousy mood free rein.
Like China is a very unusual song, a mix of Wave, rock and prog. He would have made a good impression on Abacab of Genesis and raised its level.
Thru These Walls had another single. A very atmospheric song with a similar use as drums In The Air Tonight, but not as effective and catchy, its Final fizzles slightly. Because you could have done more of it.
Do not Let Him Steal Your Heart Away is the first ballad, a song jealousy, beautifully orchestrated with strings, a Beatles-esque Bridge and not nearly as cheesy and simple as his later ballads.
The West Side is an instrumental with saxophone solo and brass, very jazzy and for me one of the highlights on the album.
Finally, there is yet to Why Can not It Wait 'til Morning another ballad with strings.

The instruments used in the production are for the most part "real", ie there are real horns and mainly acoustic drums. The production therefore does not sound quite as to the 80s and technically and on the two successors or album Invisible Touch by Genesis.
It is also essential to the sound of the album. Especially on the vinyl mix comes across very punchy and dynamic. The drums bangs also wonderful. Since normal CD can not keep up.

Conclusion:
An album with rough edges but highly varied. Compared to his other albums I listen ... Hello I Must Be Going still like to. Overall, not a masterpiece, also I like Thru These Walls and Why Can not It Wait 'til Morning not so special. Good 4 star rating but there are.
