Stabat Mater / Laudate Pueri Dominum / Confitebor (Audio CD)

Customer Review

A new recording of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater", which finally converts the current state of the interpretation of Baroque music was already eagerly awaited. This recording exceeds the expectations even; it is indeed a milestone in the history of interpretation of this work. The voices of Julia Lezhneva and Philippe Jaroussky with her pure, boyish and very sweet sound harmonize perfectly with each other. The voice of Jaroussky shows in this recording that it in recent years (and months, as you could hear in concerts) has developed in an impressive way. It shows a soft, round and full color spectrum of sound, as it would only achieve rudimentary no other countertenor, and this with a completely natural vocal manner without the slightest effort. Jarousskys voice soars weightlessly, as it is ideal for church music. Its unique timbre still lies between soprano and mezzo-soprano, with a now somewhat fuller base in the alto register and wonderful strong deep C1S and B0S. Lezhnevas voice is vibratolos, incredibly clear in height, without ever becoming sharp, and surprisingly full, strong and dark colored in depth.
Convince both completely in the art. Lezhnevas intonation is flawless, her coloratura are like razor-sharp, the music they created entirely appropriate and without any exaggeration. Jaroussky shows once again as a highly intelligent musician who carefully studied the score, the stylistic devices of the respective decade and music genre knows exactly and so considered as highly sensitive every detail designed each phrase. Quite appropriately he sometimes embellished a bit (especially with appoggiaturas), also changes smoothly in some cases, but never takes too much into the music, which is not simply correspond to the style at a church composition. In the details, the masterful musical arrangement by Jaroussky and Lezhneva of a mediocre different. Also in the design of duets shine Jaroussky and Lezhneva; they sing the many parallel ornaments and trills in vollkommenener, captivating synchronicity.
What a to this recording but really hits, goes beyond the vocal tone and the high musical arrangement. Both soloists sing not just the written music, but sing the importance of composition as human beings in a way that can not be really put into words. In particular, in the singing of Jaroussky is the spiritual content of this piece, which speaks of human love and compassion, felt in a moving way. It's like not sing one vote, but a human soul this music. It seems impossible to hear it and to be unaffected. Also Lezhneva sings with great conviction and a maturity that exceeds their actual years. Impressive is also, as both singer - far from the vanity, pushing with some currently fashionable countertenors technical feats in the foreground - obviously put their skills at the service of music to express this completely and reach the audience with her.
This will of course also supported by the context. It is essential to mention the outstanding baton of Diego Fasolis which also converts instrumental perfectly adequate with his ensemble "I Barocchisti" this spiritual music. Fasolis observed any indication Pergolesi closely, but always reflected, clever way. In addition, the use of theorbos for the basso continuo is emphasized - the excellent Rosario Conte accompanied here with an empathy and a musical creativity that stand out positively again and again, but always remains discreetly in the background.
This is interpreted here with emotional empathy and in implementing its general spiritual value. You do not need Christ or in the narrower sense to be faithful to empathize the invitation, the suffering of another human being and thereby be a better person, a deep understanding. A very humane recording that also, in contrast to many other "Stabat Mater" nothing has depressing in itself, but on the contrary acts uplifting.
As this was not enough, the CD also contains two other important sacred works of Pergolesi with Jaroussky and Lezhneva, Ensemble and Fasolis own choir (Coro della Radiotelevisione Svizzera), he has shaped and perfected over many years. The fact that these two pieces also implemented technically perfect and beautiful, of course according to the above probably already own.
