As a test Blu-Ray the Collector's Edition of Avatar had to serve. The image is sharp and vivid, the colors vivid and soundscape very convincing. The load times are a bit longer just in Avatar, but it was good to go (the Denon is slower). A small downer is the faint whistling, which indicates the drive in the Blu-Ray playback itself. However, this falls to only in very quiet passages and also depends on the listening position. This tone, however inconspicuous as the fan & Drive sound of my Samsung BDP 3600, which it replaced.
When playing a Blu-ray player is the due to the fanless design pretty warm, but with enough space around the unit should be no problem.
To check the upscaling qualities the player, Star Wars Episode IV was elected. The yellow marquee was shown very quiet and clean in the front area. Only in the middle to the rear area, they bowed to the Did something tremble. Even the star Kreutzer was reproduced in great detail except for a brief flicker on the edge.
From about 1.75 m distance from the 40-inch model was nothing more to be seen from this little impropriety.
The drive noise was no longer heard in the DVD playback from 20cm distance to the player and the player is doing only lukewarm.
The music-tests were carried out with various audio CDs and MP3s. The display of CD-text is a nice gimmick and facilitates operation without TV.
The sound was with my trusty Sony X33ES at an altitude and therefore not for the audiophile more than adequate. The player is completely silent during CD playback.
The media player can access both USB drives and on network shares. The tested videos in AVI and MKV format he gave without hesitation again.
The navigation in the media folders is a bit cumbersome. In the folder navigation unfortunately he shows me the cover files as separate files and not as a cover for the video. In addition, you can not 'scroll'. The remote control you have to press once to skip a file on. Search is not possible either, which makes the video selection somewhat lengthy contains many files.
If you select the 'Video Navigation', an all videos without specifying folder are shown as a list of what on a NAS is simply useless especially when several series. Here, menu navigation with album artwork my WDTV Live like much better.
Although Net TV is mostly a gimmick, but just the possibility of being able to watch the news at any time, I find it quite handy. However, the navigation can be a bit headstrong.
The remote control in the picture looked somewhat valent as in Natura. The pressure point is fairly tight and the arrangement of the Eject button in the lower third (rather than at the top) is still getting used to. However, it fits comfortably in your hand, is lightweight and served its purpose.
Without the soft whistling of some Blu-Ray, with a better view & Media Navigation and a better remote control of the player would be perfect. But it also offers so already a very good price / performance ratio and thus deserve a buy recommendation.
