- Image Quality -
I can associate myself with the previous recessions consistently good:
The quality - both in the S-Video and CVBS operation - is to my subjective feeling very good. There are hardly and to recognize gradations of color fringing (with CVBS). (As a comparison, I have built CVBS output of the WDTV Live-used, in which both clearly recognizable color gradations and color fringing can be seen, the image quality of the converter is significantly better -.! Even in CVBS mode)
Higher resolutions (720p / 1080p) are scaled down in good quality and liquid to PAL or NTSC resolution.
The image quality (and frame rate) is actually independent of the image content is always consistently good. I did not have the impression that the converter in some cases "no hinterherkommt", as it was written in another recession. That actually makes little sense, since the uncompressed HDMI signal already arrives at the converter and not content-dependent yet processed in any form (uncompressed, etc.) must be.
In NTSC mode, I noticed the way that the brightness of the image is significantly higher than in the PAL mode, which means I had to readjust accordingly. However, this may be due to my TV.
- Sound Quality -
At the sound, there is nothing to complain about. There were no dropouts in my tests still sound interference. The tone was always in sync with the picture. The volume is also decent (compared to the audio output of the WDTV Live a little bit quieter).
- Compatibility -
The box supports obvious as described HDCP. With all the available HDMI devices, the device worked without any problems.
- Releases -
Here I tested the resolutions offered by the WDTV Live. All resolutions stated in the manual (480p / 60, 576p / 50, 720p / 50-60, 1080i / 25-30, 1080p / 50-60) worked, the apparatus sometimes had trouble with 480p with me. It was just shown a picture - only education and plugging the HDMI or power plug or even short-term resolution change has resolved the issue.
PC resolutions (1024x768 etc.) I have not tested.
Note: 1080p / 24 is not supported!
- Image Format -
The output image format is 16: 9 wide screen, that is, the quality on 16: 9 devices is very good, because the entire screen is used. Old 4: 3 TV without a wide mode switch adjusts the picture contrast principle is horizontally squeezed ("Nerds"), for a change-over to Letterbox there is not unfortunately.
The box also generates a WSS signal (16: 9-switching), so you have to turn on the TV manually to widescreen. That made me a bit disappointed, as this both my ancient DVD player as well as the WDTV Live dominate (both on the CVBS output).
The television standard can be set via switch to NTSC or PAL. Here, an additional "Auto mode" for multi-standard equipment would be nice, which automatically applies the standard selection (PAL / NTSC) depending on the HDMI image frequency.
- Processing -
The processing of Konvertes is very good.
The metal housing makes a valued and stable impression, it also brings a significant drawback:
The Box is very sensitive to static electricity. Summing up the device on the fly, like the image falls times briefly made or the converter you have even completely restart (and plug it). Apart from this, there is no malfunction or failure during operation. The device is the way lukewarm, so it should be paid to some ventilation.
The switches are not designed for frequent switching (very small, the standard switch is also relatively close attached to the HDMI connector and thus not easy to switch).
The housing has in me no feet (or I have not found in the box), so it slips easily and possibly may also scratch surfaces. (This can, however, by some separately purchased rubber feet for sticking resolved quickly.)
- Conclusion -
The device does its job quite well, even if it could provide a total of a little more "comfort" (widescreen switching, letterbox format, auto-standard). The occasional problems with 480p are acceptable to me, as well as the sensitivity to static electricity - normally you do not fingered so constantly on the device around.
All in all, I recommend this device with a clear conscience.
