That was kind of almost two years since this book was patiently waiting in my library I open it and I regret not having done it before ... I loved this novel whose characters are very rich and searched. The structure of the story from the perspective of one of Gilbert and Helen with the brilliant idea of the paper is particularly suitable. I enjoyed discovering first of all through the eyes of Helen Gilbert and other villagers (++ reference for the slanderer next to Eliza and others). I enjoyed the character of Helen, just under that of Gilbert ... Finally, it is not so "good" that much, the episode with Mr Lawrence is indeed chilling about it ! (Incidentally, I had guessed from the first words the nature of the relationship between Helen and Mr Lawrence). So we discover through Helen Gilbert's eyes and in the end we say that this woman is right to push the (at least me, that's what I thought). Then comes the story of Helen, as a diary and that is where the story really carried me ... like Aunt Helen, you want to shout him not to marry Huntington, but unfortunately, it sealed his destiny and herself rushing into misfortune (somehow, I find that Helen was punished for her pride, she hoped to bring Arthur back on track, but it's influence quite the opposite). Through his story, I often felt sorry for Helen who endures all the horrors done to her Arthur stoically. I would say a little too stoic, I often wanted to shake her and tell her to put some soft pedal on his religious hodgepodge: a part of me understands what annoyed as her husband at her ... . The character of the Huntington dissipated is very successful, between the way he perverts Arthur (that's the worst of all), his infidelities, his little friendship (poor Lowborough Lord of all, it's my character Favorite: verily I would have found logical that they end up together: Lowborough wanted a woman who saves the Helen wanted someone to save ....) So we Helen pious seeking to save her husband all through its ... and in fact, she managed to save the husband of Millicent, her friend, but never hers ... I did not like the third part of the novel, mainly because I do not think too the relationship between Helen and Gilbert ...
What I like: the back ground of Helen, the story of her husband's dissipation, the gossip of the villagers. Lord Lowborough.
What I like least: the religious side of Helen, boring and annoying. The relationship of Gilbert and Helen that I do not think (not because of their social differences but because of what Gilbert did to Mr Lawrence and because I find that they fall in love too easily). The character of Gilbert.
In short: A beautiful feminist novel, but certainly I would have preferred less full of piety. Writing Anne Brontë is great and you never get bored one second in this narrative delivered by a blunt pen and not watered down by the female modesty of the time. To discover!
