Equal first, which is not the machine itself, but in the nature of things. The installation of a netbook over a USB flash drive is not easy. That made me however nothing, because I was the years of Linux users quite happy times frickel and tinkering somehow also fun and even a kind of masochistic addiction.
I attach great importance to safety should be of course fully encrypts the netbook. Kubuntu and Ubuntu you have to use the so-called "Alternate CD" that applies text-based installer. The installer is however not a problem and easy to use. The corresponding ISO image I had already downloaded and fueled a USB stick with it. So I could start right away.
However, the problems started immediately. The installation broke starting quite early, as should be obvious accessed a non-existent CD drive. The problem is known on the Internet and should be able to get a specific boot option in handle. Unfortunately, that did not work with me. I had to good four hours of futile effort to give up and then installed a normal Kubuntu with the graphical installer. This installation did not succeed at first attempt. The choice of encrypting the home partition during the installation process later led to the fact that the system is no longer starting.
So I started again to all without any encryption. This time everything went like Schnürrchen and the installation succeeded without any problem. The system ran perfectly. I have been degenerates sometimes briefly Win7 Professional Image from a USB stick. The installation started with no problems and would have gone through also clean, if I had not been canceled. I wanted to have no windows, but a Linux.
But since I still wanted the encryption, I installed the next day again from a USB CD drive, which I had lent me in the morning. This time also managed the installation with the Alternate CD with no problems. A small challenge was after that the configuration of the right boot paramaters as Kubuntu showed ugly text modes at startup. With a little research on the internet but I did then also the graphical boot mode for running. The system was completely installed.
In use, I am very satisfied. But sometimes the system depends somewhat and takes a while to be processed processes. Because of this every now and again noticeable but tolerable for me performance problems, there are also only 4 stars from me. Otherwise, everything fits.
The screen is large enough and is the KDE desktop is very good. It is pleasant to read and comparable to that of a business notebooks. I use the normal desktop display of KDE. The netbook version I once turned on, but saw in this no discernible advantage for me. Although there are windows, especially the configuration window, which are larger than the screen and where especially the button at the bottom protrude out of the screen. By holding down the ALT key, you can move these windows, but light and so reach the concealed button.
The keyboard uses quite pleasant. As with my old notebook my fingers roam sometimes when typing the touchpad, and then the input cursor slips. But that's nothing unusual for portable devices.
Just the word processor is very important to me because I write a lot and a lot. I also own a tablet, which however is not the first choice when writing. With the netbook typing is faster but from the hand. Also I can super control over different key combination the KDE user interface and quick access to work areas and programs. The issue here more comfortable than on the tablet. I have to research constantly while writing, I do not very important.
For battery life I can not say much. Feels like it is quite sufficient. The optimistic specified by the manufacturer eight hours but not reach. For my purposes, the capacity is sufficient in any case. I think that 5 to 6 hours of battery life are good at that.
All in all I am very satisfied with the device and do not regret the purchase. After initial difficulties I brought Kubuntu with full encryption of the hard disk to run the OS and makes a pleasing impression on the Acer. My UMTS Stick runs and also the connection to the wireless access point is functioning normally. The unit size is promising in terms of my mobility expectations.
