The initial situation is not really new: the first hyperspace capable Grossraumschiff humanity, among other things, equipped with a squadron of fighters, starts to its maiden flight ... the rest, as they say, arises. The "Odyssey" by Captain Eric Weston starts kicking in a furious adventure, in which there is no shortage of threats and action.
Certainly: whether from "Battlestar Galactica," "The Mote in God's Eye", "Earth Star Voyager", "Rhen Dark", "Space Above And Beyond", "Macross" or for that matter, "Star Trek", the vast majority of ideas at INTO THE BLACK likely to be well known SF fans.
In fact, this novel and his background is so generic that you as a reader rarely exposures need to understand the technology, the characters and the setting. It starts immediately, and you feel immediately at home as seasoned SF reader. Currie writes afloat and stringently, he draws the characters clear (and sometimes a bit too predictable), he describes the action quite thrilling and keeps the story from the beginning to move.
Unquestionably INTO THE BLACK will get no Orginalitätspreis - but who takes the in purchase and can get over will find an entertaining, well-written story in any case. The wheel invents INTO THE BLACK not new, but the novel still reflected Starting from this well. An entertaining Space Opera specify which comes down to business immediately and constantly in motion ... simply great vacation and travel reading for fans of appropriate books.
All in all, not a genre milestone, not a revolution, and definitely nothing stunningly new, instead, simply a classic story well told - and let the successor volumes, if the author is a little independent, expect a lot. Potential for being present, at least I'll keep an eye on the series!
Knappe, but deserved 4 stars.
