First sentence:

"When the White Noise went off, we were in the Garden, pulling weeds."

Action:

Shortly before Ruby's tenth birthday, the lives of many American families starts to change. Within a short time die hundreds, thousands of children at a new disease called Iaan that only seems to focus to fourteen years in the age group of eight. On the morning of her birthday, she has remained the only child left in their neighborhood, one of the last in its class. Your thoughts revolve around death, whether it's going to hurt if you can feel it, without suspecting that fate has provided far worse for them. You will survive.
The few surviving children have changed. They have all of a sudden extraordinary abilities, which otherwise are only from movies knows Photographic Memories, move objects with willpower, electricity and fire control, penetrate the thoughts of others.
The rest of the population is scared of those freaks who were once their own children, like animals ship together and locks them in a labor camp, away from the eyes of the population.
Even Ruby ends up in such a camp in Thurmond. Your own skills they frighten because they can not control. Six years she survived, where they hid their true identity. Until the day comes when you can no longer maintain their lie.

Characters:

At first glance, the group of the four main protagonists appear known. We met them often in books and television series. The youngest, the leader, the know-alls who to bumping outsider. A love story. Nevertheless, these characters were for me more than just that. Small details make them lively and amiable, they evolve, there are dynamics between them, they look authentic.

Ruby Daly: was kidnapped with ten years of a paramilitary organization in one of the newly established labor camp. She is scared of their own abilities, they can not check these inadequately. For fear of harming their neighbors so that she avoids other, goes touches out of the way.
Ruby makes in the book with a character development that is authentic and understandable. It is not a typical kick-ass heroine, as we know it from other protagonists of dystopias, but anything but weak. She is learning to fight in the field of their opportunities and to overcome their own fears.

Liam Stewart Lee: is not your typical Badboy from other YA books. He is sensitive, overprotective, self-sacrificing and a sporty zero number. Compared with the other three, I have unfortunately experienced him as shallowest character. In this case of "flat" at a high level is mentioned. He behaves in a plastic in Rubys perception and small details that we learn about him, him give quite its own charm.

Charles Carrington Chubs Meriwether IV: "Stuck-up know-it-all-with-a-heart-of-gold" (p 483). More would have to say no to this character actually. For me, he was in fact the best, most versatile, most profound and most developed character of the book. That will not necessarily always go hand in hand with sympathy.

Suzume to: is significantly younger than the rest of the group. She brings acts as youngest, but also help here small details (her penchant for girly stuff, her gloves, her way to communicate), to turn it into more and to create a lovable character.

Writing style and structure:

The book is written in the first person in the past tense. We see the story of Ruby's perspective.
The writing style in my opinion is more demanding than in most other YA novels. You have to concentrate read, so as not to lose, because always be inserted between flashbacks, sometimes just a few lines long. However, it also makes the most. He is eloquent, profound and just beautiful.

My Opinion & a small criticism:

The book are an interesting idea, a beautiful style and interesting characters are based. Fast-paced action is not necessarily a part of it. Especially the first 80-100 pages are a bit slow. Of course here persecutions and struggles, but still have the protagonists extraordinary abilities, they do not throw so at every opportunity around. I consider that in this context, not negative, but you should still be prepared to perhaps advance to not enter with false expectations in the book.
The romantics are perhaps a little disappointed with the first part. While there is a love story, but this is delicate and sneaks a rather, is not in the absolute forefront of what appealed to me very good, but certainly not to everyone's liking.

This beautiful writing style is also the same with a price. Ruby's education ended abruptly at age ten, the next six years she has spent under reasonably peers. With that in mind, then worked their own language, their thoughts and their knowledge in my eyes "formed". It is difficult to assess the course for me, can be expressed as a sixteen year old, after her fault formation has been finishing in fourth grade and she was surrounded only by nearly the same age, I have no sound, scientific know-how to do so. Moreover, I find it better in the expression for the benefit of the writing style to turn a blind eye, but some comparisons I would then prefer omitted (Ex .: He sounded like a jock amped up on too much juice and adrenaline game. S. 322 After Ruby never a attended regular high school and thus had no dealings with the jocks known to us, I find such expressions such as not logical).

SPOILER:

Clancy's actions unfortunately I have found to be very predictable, especially after his schmaltzy apology after he and Ruby first met each other. I personally would have preferred to stay on his approach a little longer in the dark and hope at the same time to learn in the next part more about his motives.

Recommendation: I would of the language requirements for her English language skills comparable to those recommended upper secondary school (ie not mean that you must have visited those who often reads in English, can also be tuned car.!) This book. In my opinion, it is located a little above the normal YA-language use, which is why I would imagine that it would not be suitable as "English entry-book". But of course can vary from reader to reader, so I would always first look into the Leseseprobe inside.
