I can not understand at all that the knife sharpener is to damage the blades. Also occur during normal knife sharpening no metal shavings on (that have still managed at any knife). Maybe it's on the way to handle it.
I do it always so: Laying knife with the cutting edge facing upwards on the table and then pass over to the knife sharpener (not vice versa). It really only * minimum * (virtually no) to exert pressure. Repeat the exercise three or four times. Again: It really needs virtually no pressure to make it work. If one keeps in mind is my opinion there is no risk to do something broken.
So for me, a strong buy recommendation.
