Assessment
The first novel by Anya Seton is already - as will her other books - very thoroughly researched, and allows the reader an interesting insight into the social and political conditions in the young America. The action takes place mainly on the east coast, but also the issues of the early development of the western areas and the institutionalized slavery in the South to be addressed.
Life of Aaron Burr is presented facts faithfully, regarding Theodosias marriage to Joseph Alston and her love for Meriwether Lewis, the situation is not entirely clear: The author himself refers in his preface (Author's Note) to various sources to support its interpretation , other sources indicate that it should be taken a few literary liberties and Theodosias husband and the marriage of the two who portrays negative, as it corresponds to the historical facts.
Nevertheless, has the written fluently and vividly engrossing novel entertainment and beyond historical information about the machinations of Aaron Burr.
The complexity of this interesting personality is well worked out, as the time for the exceptionally close relationship between father and daughter.
Readers who are interested in American history of the 19th century, the novels can be recommended in any case.
