The shooting of "The Hallmark Sessions" were at that time intended as a promo shots that wanted to send to various recording companies Lenny. Therefore, the sound is not always outstanding (making Lenny but absolutely betting with playful Can)
Lenny was then, in 1961, 20 years old. The recordings were then not used and have been 40 years on first surfaced and re-released. A lucky! Of the previous four albums that I own of Lenny, this is by far the best!
The recordings were then recorded in a "slip" in a single day. All First-takes without a trial! They will play pieces from the genres jazz, country and flamenco. Lenny beherrst all styles so perfectly that one wonders when he learned it all! At just 20 years! Highlights for me are "It could happen to you" with its perfect solo runs, the funky "Oscar Blues" and the three flamenco pieces "Solea", "Taranta" and "Arabian Fantasy". The three last-mentioned pieces have knocked my socks off completely! Over the biography were recorded on a cheap classical guitar these pieces. This again clearly indicates that the instrument does not set the tone, but the musicians!
Every guitarist should have this CD in his possession! Simply amazing how Lenny plays here!
