Details:
The product description is misleading: A10 is not the processor but the product number Keedox (A10-D to be precise).
It features the Allwinner A20 chipset corresponding to an ARM A7 (dual-core, 1.2 GHz) and the Mali400MP2 video processor able to decode 4K (see Allwinner website for more info).
Playing 1080p movies did not pose any problem!
Android 4.2.2 kernel Version 3.4.39 build RSH-A10-D ROOT XBMC MAC 20140819 is installed.
I looked for a newer firmware version on the internet, I have found that older versions: the Keedox checks updates on startup, I think he does well but just only last generation products receive Android 4.4
Ergonomics is decided at the beginning:
- Either using a simple interface designed for the remote control (named TvDLauncher)
- Either you switch on Android, but without touchscreen ... so must quickly press the "Mouse" button on the remote. If you know Android, you will feel at home, otherwise learning will be longer.
Default applications can do most: eg video player RST reads any format with subtitles in .srt (you do not find direct application, you click on a video file in the file manager you can select this drive).
I was disappointed by the XBMC plugin for Android (applying vidon Xbmc) I had heard the most good but the version used here is not really WAF: no titles in default, and to access content DLNA is far from being live (must be sought uPnP devices) ...
Anyway, you can access the Play Store to complete your software range: this is the big advantage of this product, but all applications are not optimized for this graphics chipset (VLC has bad performance for example, but also MyCANAL ).
By cons, you might quickly fill the system memory by installing your favorite apps: consider moving applications installed to the internal SD card (4Gb) to free up RAM (1GB 400MB reduced because of the OS): You gain a lot in system responsiveness.
Also note that the Keedox is ROOTE, so we can uninstall the app useless systems (email if you use GMail, if you use Firefox browser, etc ...), you can also use applications like Link2SD to force the displacement of applications SDCARD restive towards space (to avoid system app) may for example move XBMC (100MB) and ...
File storage side, I use an SDHC card. If you use Microsoft onedrive, you can not select which files to download (it is always the internal memory): in this case, you may be confronted with the limit of 4Gb if you download a video ...
If you want to use the application Canal Plus (MyCanal application), it is not direct because this application, like others, is not available on the Play Store via this device.
You will need to download the APK file on an alternative site (I used getandroidapp.org) and allow the installation of applications from sources other than the Play store.
Live TV is choppy, and downloading movies is not working.
I advise you to stay in version 2.0.7 which is more fluid (the current version is 2.2.2).
The connection is complete, the Wifi is fast and works perfectly, including to a hotspot if the Keedox is connected by Ethernet cable. I use the optical output for sound in 5.1 when I watch my mkv.
Best TV screen mode is automatically detected (disconnect / reconnect the HDMI cable if it is not), it can be changed manually in the display settings.
4 USB ports would have been welcome, if you connect a mouse, there will be only one USB port to connect a hard disk and power ...
The remote control has a "Mouse" button to allow you to use certain applications or the Play Store: it moves in increments of 2, so it is sometimes annoying to click a small icon. You have to go in the input parameters and change the mouse speed to solve this problem.
To access the icon "full screen" with MyCanal application, you must switch to mouse mode, set the video and press 2 times VERY quickly ... OK
The remote control is complete for multimedia use (source selection, files ...).
If you need to type text, you'll quickly get tired: a mouse improves ergonomics, a keyboard with touchpad as the K400 brings much convenience.
Attention Qwerty keyboard remains in whatever we do (FR setting / Qwerty does not change). Fortunately, the application
"Physical QWERTY keyboard (free)" to solve the legumanoid bp (you must then select the keyboard as the default keyboard in input parameters).
The Keedox is announced compatible "Google TV remote": I have not managed to make it work (the app on my phone connected to the same local network, does not see the Keedox).
In standby, the red LED on the front panel remains discreet.
Otherwise, yes, the little doc is in English, and also website.
And if you're wondering, yes it is possible to play. 3D games work, but most are designed for the touch interface, so it will fit: a touchpad good help ...
I am satisfied with this product, but a little disappointed that MyCanal has not improved compatibility.
I chose it for its price, and to see what we could do with.
Now that I know it meets my expectation I tell myself that I should have taken a latest generation model with much more memory.
