When is High we remain at the table, but apparently badly behaved guests do not stop to get out. This undermines the unity of the narrative and the many digressions in the form of flashbacks a little break the rhythm, the sauce is hard to take. The reason for this family reunion is not only culinary seated because children have committed acts of extreme gravity. From the main course, the tone will lose its lightness and its acidity, to address heavier flavors, more heady, such as education or the meaning of life.
This theater screenplay shot is a bit stodgy but necessary because the style of Herman Koch (cook Batavian?) Quite impersonal and bland would not suffice for the 330 pages of this novel.
Here we will adopt the Netherlands gastronomy is synonymous with empty plates but high in literary terms, prices surrealist wines, clinical environments and too salty additions. One wonders why so many Dutch come to visit our country! (The passage in the Dutch in France is quite crisp and very well seen).
This book will appeal to those who need a novel to think for themselves, but disappoint the gourmet style and originality. Reads very easily however and deserves its three stars.
