Customer Review

Actually, I need as an amateur, the snaps only occasionally that Fuji did not, for decades I have my Niko equipment screwed onto D5000 + 7 lenses + SB600, to in the last two years a decent Micro Four Thirds (M4 / 3) equipment based on Lumix GH2, GH3 Lumix, Pen PL3 and 9 lenses.
Besides still good bridge cameras and kilos of covers / Gelis, filter, display antiglare, tripods, Blitzer, reflectors, chargers and other accessories, as every serious amateur also.
To open a photo store, it is not enough, but it is clear to me that I am completely over-equipped (my wife has of course recognized) and absolutely privileged under the camera owners.
Before signing up in adventurous investments like the acquisition of X-Pro1 and expensive lenses to so you should examine in advance whether nonfinancial Colateral damage, eg Taschengeld- or Hushaltsgelderhöhungen must mitbudgetieren as hush money.

Wiesoooo I then necessarily the Fuji X-Pro would have, certainly most people do not understand you and shake their heads.
But to explain this, I have to look back almost 50 years. At that time I had as a student my first camera, a Voigtlander with bellows, and I have therefore not with glory. Many years later, I treated myself to a Nikon FT2 who accompanied me through the desert, and jungle Savane many years.
She was always reliable and resilient. Incidentally, I had just about all Nikon, the F301, F65, F100, F3, F4 and ... est in recent years, the D40, D3000, D3100 and now ... the D5000 and is also sufficient for me.
But in the last 2 years it was hardly possible to technical progress - particularly with the introduction of the mirrorless and the m4 / 3 standard - ignore. So I gradually came to Olympus and Lumix GH2 and with the recently for GH3. This is fantastic and there are cameras with Zuiko, Panasonic, Leica and Voigtlander also fantastic lentils, some with incredible light intensities, edge definition and appetizing focal lengths ...
But with every new camera, I versackte collapse into Platik, menus and submenus, technical possibilities and automatisms and was only busy handling the camera to study and no longer take pictures with. At some point I realized that I was on the completely wrong way and began to think, a Leica to buy to remember me on photographing back. Fortunately it is (without lenses) as expensive as a small car and has kept me from, but the desire for a "real" camera without WLAN, color laboratory and tampering of any kind was latent and grew with each new release and technical orgy of camera manufacturers.

I walk occasionally and regularly on the web, rather routinely and saw the beautiful family and other pictures of Ken Rockwell and his comments on the Fuji X-100 and X-100S. This aroused my curiosity, and from then on I read and watched all available tests, reviews, reviews, videos on the Fuji X, which occupied me about 3 weeks. I will not go into it that everyone can for themselves, but in the end I knew: "This is my camera"!

My only problem was: "What?", Because the X-100 and X-100S have a built 35mm lens and then I knew that I would end up in the long term, at a X with interchangeable lens - if already, because already! It would also in an emergency can be the silver X-E1, but the absence of an optical viewfinder I would permanently endure difficult ... I know that from my PEN-PL3.
So I came to the X-Pro1.

The X-Pro1 is obviously very expensive and I had to sell some binoculars, watches, spotting scopes etc., because with two zoom lenses 18-55mm and 55-200mm addition to currently comes loose as a kit to more than 2,000 euros and costs separately the three parts a few hundred euros more. A fixed focal length lens as the 35mm f: 1.4 currently costs 500 Euro, the Zeiss 32mm f Touit: 1.8 from 800 euros. For a complete equipment with the above two zooms, to the 18mm, 35mm (or 32mm Zeiss), 60mm, flash (the X-Pro does not have one), second battery, etc. you scratch without effort at the 5,000 point limit.
Luckily, there are poor people recently the X-E1, almost identical to the X-Pro but with onboard flash and no optical viewfinder for "dumping price" to 700-800 euros and as a kit with the 35mm from 1,200 euros. This is the minimum price of admission in the Fuji X-class. Thus one is flexible and can be retrofitted later.
The X-100S with built-35mm lens is also not favorable. The entry-level devices X-10, X-20 & Co. I will consciously ignore.

Under these circumstances, it would have been rational to buy a top Nikon. AAAAB ... there is on the one hand these nasty rumors of spots on the "full frame" sensors on the other hand I have now indigestion in all cameras from Polycarboat, replete with colorful displays, wireless and Spielkram ... In short, I had again appetite for home cooking, in exclusivity, heavy metal, optical viewfinder, control dial with shutter speed as with my old Nikkormat FT2, which could be controlled so easily without on-board computer with two wheels ...

The above amounts to a Fuji X-equipment, of course, sums that sound frightening for the average consumer.
But the X-Pro1 or X-E1 are no cameras for "normal" people!
We really are talking about the S-class of system cameras and an operating concept that is aimed at people who want to take pictures manually, aperture, ISO and shutter have dynamic change in flesh and blood and hardly with menus and buttons thousands Employ want.
Quite so, it is not but:
-For One thing, it is also an automatic function for aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc. (for snapshots with the camera during a cold start takes about 2 seconds until it is ready)
-for other to get to the menu not quite over, namely to configure for example to the camera or to determine, for example, the ISO or film locations and more.
However, one can already see which is almost the basic settings such as shutter speed or aperture before starting. I say almost because both available zoom lenses have no aperture-marking and read off the ISO you need the Fn key, which is the operating camera.
As you can see, the X-Pro1 is neither fish nor fowl:
They will usually manually operated, but the electronics still goes no way. This is also true vice versa.
Actually, I had not imagined it so, but you must read the manual, experimenting around and additional Fachlitteratur around the part to control (for example, the book "Fujifilm X-Pro1" of Franzis-Verlag) study relatively quickly. But 4-20 hours - depending on requirements - must invest one already. The X-Pro1 be described as "manual" camera is just as correct as alligators as pets to classify.

The X-Pro1 has not yet swiveling display touchscreen. That cost her Pünkte and places in the best cameras ranking.
She is like a fine Roadster with leather seats, 400 PS and 7-speed manual gearbox with no air conditioning, windows or stereo system, the engine plays music. But if you want, you can take a lane assistant, spacers, brake assist, cornering lights, navigation and automatic transmission. You are not just superficially but with the board!
And one more thing: you will not start quickly and is not first as a sports camera choice.

Like I said before, who liebaugelt with the X-Pro1, should be prepared to spend between two and five thousand euros for a well-equipped system. Sure, there will always be clever Meier, which will claim a 35mm sufficient, one should use his feet. But I am of the opinion that such a camera makes sense only if one possesses focal lengths from 12-200mm, etc. to cover flash, spare batteries, tripod, pole and a UV filter to all situations.
Now the price question: Is the Fuji X-Pro system worth the money?

ME yes! What you have there in your hands is quite a feat that very reminds of a modern Leica, only technically much, much more extensive. Obviously Fuji has endeavored to gather the best and what is feasible: All metal, made in Japan, cutting-edge technology, performance, precision ... even the enamel of the label is to be applied by hand in Japan. For me awakens this camera and the matching lenses emotions, something like the new version of Mercedes SL 300 with folding doors. The quality of the X-Pro1, but does not stop with materials and workmanship.

Sensor and image are so good that Chip has awarded in March 2012 "100%" for the image quality. The highest ranked 77 with 24 MP Sony came to 90%, the Canon EOS 70D to 87.6%, the Nikon D7100 also with 24 MP to 90.4% etc. This naturally led to a storm of indignation among the experts who thought that this note only of a "full sensor" camera class - if at all - could be achieved / expected.
But when I (and my eldest daughter, who works in the film and television industry) look at the pictures of the X-Pro1, I must admit that they are quite startling. In all major test magazines and professionals, I have seen on the internet the buzz sounded similar.
When I use the ratings in the international Amazon sites look at myself (and a pair of negative reviews because of excessively high prices or poor delivery negligible) reaping the XPro1 throughout almost 5 stars.

Personally, I'm not ready yet, just shot the first pictures with different settings in challenging lighting conditions and have, of course, the possibilities of the camera and the lenses angetestet only approach. But it looks so far from so, be as my (high) expectations fulfilled. What bothers me a bit is that the software is replete with opportunities and gimmicks, just like the cameras of the highest class.
Who, like me, has purist expectations will therefore disappointed. Just about everything can be manipulated. But the menus are clearly structured and easy to understand. Of course, I still have problems this or to find it, but I have read the camera only for a few hours and the manual only partly. That will give in the next few days everything.

In principle, the X-Pro1 is a sophisticated camera as the other of the upper and top class too, but with the finest production quality, where you manually direct access to shutter speed, exposure compensation (turning wheels on top of the housing), zoom and iris (on rotating rings on the lens ).
ISO is also directly accessible via the Fn key. The remainder incl. All gadgets from the menu.
I would not begin to list what the X-Pro1 can do everything, but there are brochures, advertising, videos of users, customers and books with pictures around here. 300 pages.
My intention is only from my point of view the high quality to consider the total cost and the price-performance ratio of the X-Pro1.

If something should stand out negative, I will of course follow up on an update.
One is ever clear: The two zooms work like air pumps. That should not take too long to take the finest dust from entering the optics.
The front lens rotates sometimes with light, which could be problematic when pole filter. I think it is recommended as often as possible to mount the hard-focal lengths and to protect the zoom. For now, it still remains at 5 stars.

To be continued for sure!
