The discography of Dixit Dominus is unfairly skinny. Youth composition by Handel, it surpasses many of his mature works. This is a master stroke, a jewel full of contrasting hues. To cite two examples, the first movement is an extraordinary force, while the penultimate movement, a moving soprano duet, is melancholy sweetness. Gardiner has recorded the work twice. This version, the oldest but still republished, is best. Finally writing "the best" does not do it justice. She seems in a state of grace: strength, balance, dynamics, precision and commitment. In particular, the choirs are unconventional (including vocalizations listen Gloria!). Other choices? Minkowski, but sometimes his version "hasty" less convincing. As much a reference disk that perfect gift for a neophyte in classical music.
