Steven is now much older and has some time worn a royal crown, but now lives in a cell, while his wife and daughters seem out to argue for power. In this situation, he is visited by a young lady who asks him why he is no longer king, and how it's ever happened that he was one once. She has the Doctor doing a Computersimulakrum the original, which Steven not particularly appreciates.
Steven tells the young woman from one adventure to the first Doctor and Dodo, during which he has landed on the planet Comfort where the two younger ones are forced a few minutes after landing in the army, while the Doctor sees a firing squad over ,
As a result, the two companions are separated and Steven, who has already served once, is boxed by an accelerated basic training and then thrown to the front, where it is more and more a part of the war machine, in a war whose purpose unknown to him remains and where he gets his opponents never really seen. Like many soldiers, he becomes more and more absorbed by the atmosphere of war and can hardly solve out of it until it behind enemy lines has one night an unexpected encounter. After that he decides the world, the Comfort is called to change forever.
Overall, a very nice story that beyond the psychological effects of war and military thinking on soldiers and officers very good tracing and helps explain why so many front-line soldiers have difficulty finding later in peace and return to civilian life.
