- Slow autofocus with simple room lighting (light value as EV4) and darker. This snapshot will be difficult. In daylight, very fast, but still a little slower than the Lumix GH2.
As a comparison between Olympus OM-D E-M1 and Panasonic Lumix GH2 (a 3 year old camera!) At brightness EV4, I have a video uploaded. Umfokusieren from 1m to 3m. Optimal conditions: High-contrast object, halogen light (flicker) and the cameras are verwackelungsfrei on a tripod.
When ambient light conditions the differences are not as drastic as in the video, although the GH2 will almost always easy and I found no situation where the E-M1 would be faster than the old GH2.
Here you can see the video on the not so good: therefore, the time difference is concluded that the GH2 focuses on the object, easily shoot over the top and then in a split second again to place the sharpest declines. The E-M1 shoots over the top and then is still a good deal, then go in the other direction and shoots back over the top, and the next direction change then it works, but sometimes not and the game goes 1 2 times like that. The course costs a lot of time.
--- UPDATE ---
For the autofocus problem I have now a good (though not perfect) Workaround found. If you interested in helping out, I have to write a few details in the comments of this review. First comment on the second page of comments, date: 31.01.2014.
--- END --- UPDATE
- Photosensitivity autofocus: Genial. Although the focus is more and more slowly with increasing darkness so he also has an advantage over the GH2: As long as there is a hint of residual light present, he is able to focus. Extremely good, even better than the 1D Mark III.
- Too short (because one does not need a lot to write, who once had a different professional or semi-professional camera, who knows that it can hold a much longer battery) battery life. Second battery is mandatory.

- Genial good workmanship down to the command dial around the shutter release button. This feels very different to the wheel for the thumb and the confused when operating. Apart from the workmanship is impeccable, eindutig at the level of the EOS 1D Mark III, I had time.
- The weight is relatively high, even compared to the GH2, have not measured it, maybe it's just felt. But it seems much harder than the GH2.
- Super Image Stabilizer which gives better results in practice, as the built-in 14-140mm Panasonic stabilizer.
- When the camera almost everything is configurable, almost professional level.
- In almost all electrical appliances with arrow keys and Enter / OK in the middle of the knob is used to confirm or select. Be it for. As a DVD player, iPod, cameras from other manufacturers, etc.
I previously thought that only Panasonic on the "fabled" idea comes that you leave a menu by pressing the Enter key, but I was taught. Olympus has also managed to even "genius". For menus with two submenus that works like this:
1. Select the menu item you can select with OK. (Z. Movie BI)
2. The first sub-menu you can also select with OK (z. B. Recording Volume)
3. The second sub-menu you can then only with the "arrow right" button to select (eg. B. External Microphone). Pressing Enter one falls back one level up.
Then Leiber but as with Panasonic, even if I do not find that good, but because you have at least always the "right" button to use if you want deeper into the menu, and when you get used to the illogical use, then come you do not even make friends on the idea of using the OK button.
- Absolutely outstanding picture quality (but more on that so many people have written so much that I can save)
- The electronic viewfinder and the monitor are really extremely good. The first camera with an electronic viewfinder, which is so good that I even use it. Coming in from the GH2 (or many years before Minolta Dimage A1) was then also praised. I found him terribly and have never used it. Coming in from the E-M1 is Outrageous (and only in the positive sense)
- The eye cup is a bit too small for people with big noses.
Olympus seem to the conscious and therefore provides a minimally larger eyecup as an accessory, which fits perfectly, but only against a proud surcharge.

- In my opinion, far too many meaningless functions. The manual is really great (something that I again may experience with a new electrical appliance I could not have expected), but could be reduced by 40 loose pages, if they'd let the frills from the camera. And the operation and familiarization period would also be significantly shorter. I imagine, a non-technology freak gets the camera in his hand. As any normal person but is overwhelmed.
Why you have to pack up in a semi-professional camera so extreme effect many functions, post functions and completely useless stuff such. B. "Photo Story"?
Maybe I'm the exception, but I count myself among the target audience as a camera and I would never get the idea to work on the things in the camera. There is a computer with a large monitor.
- Despite the overload with too many "toy features" has Olympus still managed that you can reach and adjust the core functions of a camera in a short time (albeit not as efficiently as with the Canon 1 series cameras, but Canon can also away everything irrelevant for the professional is)
- Good remote control function with smartphone / tablet. Unfortunately, there is no to PC / MAC software, so it will (hopefully only for now) limited to iOS / Android.
Conclusion:
On the one hand ... The superior picture quality (for 4/3 sensor), the brilliant anti-blur and the flawless workmanship show that you have bought a high-quality device. The photosensitivity of the autofocus is impressive.
On the other hand ... However, if you see how much the auto focus (in terms of speed) is outbid by a 3-year-older Panasonic, then makes me doubt that if I'll ever be happy with the E-M1. I'm jealous of the buyer, who have never photographed with a GH2 or GH3 because for these people, the autofocus performance of the E-M1 certainly appears very good.
The battery life and the (perceived?) High weight spoil the overall picture a little.
The four stars for the assessment could therefore not be five, because Olympus Camera, "Top Performance" advertises as "high end" and the "Fast AF" clearly distinguishes, and looking at the performance in relation to the price in other case (eg must see. B. Panasonic GH3).
