This requires a high-resolution camera sensor and a lens with which the numerous pixels can also be used.
With the objective to be described here TS-E 24mm F3.5 II I have acquired the necessary basis. None of my previous lenses provides such sharpness over the entire image area. This applies first to the basic position (ungeshiftet). The image circle of a TS lens is also so large that only the best central area comes with excellent optical performance advantage. But even in geshifteter position is noted towards the edge region with my EOS 6D no loss of sharpness.
The shift function, ie the shift of the used area in the image circle, is via a small wheel, which is in the basic position of the lens on the top front of the viewfinder prism. The wheel is something no one than the corresponding tilt wheel. In the packaging of the lens is a small adapter that allows the knob is bigger and therefore grip. Some camera bodies (APS-C with flash), this adapter may not be used, however, because the wheel or otherwise affect the housing or the rotation limits to the lens axis. On the opposite side of the lens there is a locking wheel, with the accidental adjustment of the shift position can be prevented. In the neutral position a latching function can be felt. Overall, the mechanics of the shift function is very good. This is also necessary because in addition to the pure adjustment and the lens weight should be counteracted.
The tilt function, so tilting the lens relative to the image plane, also by means of a wheel with opposing locking wheel. These are offset to shift cog in the basic position by 90 °, so from the perspective of the photographer on the left side of the lens (determination wheel right). This mechanism is prior to the shift mechanism, ie further away from the camera body. Through the arched rail system this mechanism is more complex than that of the shift function and contributes to their corresponding part to the total weight on. The axis of this wheel has unfortunately more game than you can expect from a precision mechanics. The hole for the drive shaft appears to be a little too big. This should not lead to a point deduction, but tarnishes somewhat the overall impression. Here is felt in the center position a catch.
Both functions mentioned above can be made using scales, respectively, both at the wheel as well as the locking wheel, defined set (in mm for moving "12mm +/- shifting" and in degrees for tilting, "+/- 8.5 ° Tilting") , On the one hand very convenient to adjust defined predict shifts and angular, but also to reproduce photographic situations.
In order to deviate from the previously mentioned basic position, the lens is mounted doubly rotatable. Directly on the lens mount, the rotation around the optical axis by +/- 90 °. A small lever on the camera body on the right side of the lens mount must be pressed tightly to leave the home position can. At intervals of 30 °, a detent can be felt. In the two end positions of the small lever engages as in the middle position and must be pressed again to exit this position. Thus there are no restrictions in the choice and combination of the shift direction and the tilt axis. If you want to access for reasons of cost to its predecessor, should know that there is no possible rotation between the tilt and shift mechanism.
Working with such a lens is usually accompanied with use of a tripod and a certain nonchalance. Also for the optimum focus with Magnifier will take your time. Especially the tilt function presupposes decisions of photographers from AF can be taken away from him in a meaningful way is not. In this respect, it is almost self-evident that this objective or such lenses are not equipped with an autofocus. Manual focus for the TS-E 24mm F3.5 II runs very nice and soft. The front lens is not rotated and also not displaced in the longitudinal axis. The close range starts at 21cm. The lens is therefore also suitable for close-ups. The iris control is carried out but in the usual way from the camera.
What I would hope would be a tripod mount as an accessory (there are other suppliers of 500 and more). When large telephoto lens, the tripod mount to shift in focus and on the discharge of the lens mount on the camera is essential. Here, the TS lens, there are other reasons for the use of a tripod collar.
1. When you "geshiftete" would assemble recordings to a higher resolution, weitwinkligeren photo together more, then the lens has to be fixed on the tripod so that the camera is in contrast "shifted". This avoids parallax errors that would require in the transition region, the post-processing of the individual images.
2. If you want to influence the depth of field in close-ups by means of "on tilt", then you can tilt the camera body to the lens with a fixed lens. The picture remains, because no change in position between the object and the lens is carried out.
So: Even 5-star products leave nothing even custom.
Compared with other TS lenses, the TS-E 24mm F3.5 II shows exceptional imaging performance. My practical experience can be traced by measurement on eg [...]. In order to make this statement I have the TS-E 17mm can test the merchants f4 Canon 24mm f3.5 and the Samyang and then compared the images with the now acquired lens.
Who is the big picture angle for small rooms and narrow urban canyons important for the TS-E 17mm is suitable which has the almost identical mechanical design. The large field of view with respect to the requests but feathering its toll. Who can afford it, just believe me: "Both complement each other neither of them replaces the other.."
The Samyang TS lens, however, has only a manually adjusted iris which can not be controlled by the camera. But that's not the only reason for the price difference. In my opinion, the Samyang lens TS is taking into account the significantly lower optical and mechanical quality ultimately even simpler too expensive. The Samyang lens has retained since its introduction almost the same price, while the prices of Canon TS lenses always continue to fall. But the actual value is reflected in the resale value (see E-Bay).
Regarding the available sharpness I can only hope that Canon will soon come with a camera housing on the market that comes close to the resolution of the Nikon and Sony-FF cameras. Otherwise I'm going to A7R Sony with Adapter Mobile to bring out sooner or later, even more out of this great objective.

I have not written anything consciously to the creative possibilities of a TS lens, because that would not be typical for this TS lens and I assume that the serious prospects in this regard knowledgeable. The Toy Effect often shown on the net with exaggerated blur, unfortunately shows only one aspect, leaving the real potentials of TS lenses unnoticed.
