Apart from the "Enigma Variations" and the five steps "Pomp And Circumstances", the music of Edward Elgar is little known south of the Channel. And that's a shame. Most of his orchestral music is contained in this delicious box toffies: - His two symphonies are very recommendable, especially the split that marked the revival of the genre in England with its splendid Scherzo. - The "Pomp And Circumnstances" playful as this is not allowed, with the right amount of whimsy. - The sublime concerto for cello and orchestra in its version with Jacqueline Dupré. - Openings "Cockaigne" and "Froissard" - The "Sea Pictures" sung by Janet Baker
Edward Elgar reached an extreme art of orchestration in his mature years.
