The historical cycle of the publication in France of New Krypton was quite complicated, and complicated history that says publication said complicated story to follow.
To understand the ins and outs of this cycle (pre-Renaissance), it should read "The World According Atlas" (see this blog). This friendly story, the innocuous at first scenario, extent raises the groundwork for what will happen in the cycle of New Krypton and introduces a major protagonist who remain in the shadows for a while.
Then the actual cycle of New Krypton actually begins with a magazine Panini Comics, DC Universe special edition nº18 entitled "Brainiac" (published in August 2010), written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by the great Gary Frank . It was recently reissued by Urban Comics in the fifth volume of "Geoff Johns has Superman". To summarize these pages, Superman Brainiac it confronts and manages to defeat him. With his victory, Superman grabs a glass bell containing Kandor, Kryptonian city that had been miniaturized by Brainiac. It carries the bell to his fortress of solitude, the North Pole, and went to the city and its inhabitants normal size. Superman is overwhelmed with joy by finding fellow - a joy that will be short at the high price to pay ...
In this volume, there is Superman in tragedy following the events at the end of "Brainiac". He discovers life in the city of Kandor, renamed New Krypton after its normal size was returned to him, and the operation of the Kryptonian society and helps its 100,000 compatriots to learning their recent authorities. Meanwhile, the US military closely monitors these potential Supermen, and, in parallel, conducting experiments on the remains of Brainiac (who were recovered after his fight against Superman) in order to draw the immense knowledge that the android had accumulated.
The scenario (Geoff Johns, James Robinson, Sterling Gates) is amazing. It is addictive, with many twists, characters that are not often seen in general, and a great big conspiracy in the background. The plot is fairly dense and many digressions do not help to keep the thread. So there will maybe here and there white, but we can fill the boxes when looking around on the web.
Although there are nine designers, this does not spoil the graphical homogeneity, except perhaps when passing Jamal Igle, whose work has not received inking up.
We also appreciate the good work of Jérôme Wicky translator and text quality.
This first volume, at least, is very promising, but especially with the second, "the heart of New Krypton", things get exciting!
