Rimsky-Korsakov: 5 Operas (CD)

Customer Review

Rimsky 5 for the price of one (they leave)! Decca thank you! The booklets are absent as rightly notices the previous reviewer, but at that price, difficult to ask for more. So 11:30, 11 CDs, five operas Katcheï the immortal, Kitezh, the Maid of Pskov, Sadko, The Tsar's Bride. All live, 90s, Kirov, St. Petersburg. Since Gergiev slightly dropped Rimsky (and Russian opera in general) for the pure symphony or even Parsifal and Donizetti. Pity. A Tsar Saltan, A May Night or Coq d'Or by the same would not stain. The operas of Rimsky immersed in dreams, sometimes wacky (Sadko), mysticism (Kitezh, the invisible city that is hidden in the eyes of the Tatar invaders, a whole program) ... and always in orchestral opulence, but is this a surprise? Orchestra turns shiny or dark, soloists and upscale choirs, sound recording without major defects without special glow for live performances. If you fumble the Rimsky, you will let go more! To be completed with the DVD Sadko, typical of the great Russian traditional opera, shimmering and colorful symbolic modernism enthusiasts, skip (unlike Amazon information about this DVD, there are many in French subtitles).
