(3) DS newcomer: impressions

(Review This is therefore a little longer than most other)

The first thing that strikes directly negative: The resolution of the 3DS is ridiculously low. Here you need Nintendo have placed no wrong Verständis: 400 * 240 pixels is not even been up to date 10 years ago and even quadruple to 800 * 480 pixels (double width + height) would go through under any circumstances as HD!
Especially in view of the fact that even cheap smartphones mention a 1280 * 720 pixel screen standard, which is a very poor performance of Nintendo.
Tech-savvy readers will note here that the screen vertically "doubles" is (800 pixels), which is used in the 3D representation of two frames display the same - but the fact remains that the games run in only 400 * 240p (if also different for each eye).

Depending on the game that is sometimes more and sometimes less annoying - but you can easily distinguish each pixel even without perfect eyesight, and it is always a disillusion from the smartphone screen back to look at the 3DS especially when XL model.

However, the 3D effect works very well, much better than the bischerigen model. The big question, however, whether one really can use when playing the feature. In my view, unfortunately (still) no. While the 3D effect remains constant, even with moderate position change - but the low resolution of the 3DS makes to that distant objects are only rendered a few pixels wide, where it (often) happens that sometimes only one eye sees the object and the other not.

To now but also something good to say that the color reproduction and the contrast and black level of the screen is really good. I could see no 'ghosting'.
However, the bottom screen is not as rich in contrast and clear viewing angle-dependent - it can, however, get over there one usually looks at the top of the screen. (It falls while playing even less)

The touch screen is unfortunately not quite on the cutting edge. While there is the best resistive touch screen I've used so far, but which has in turn the reason that all touch screen devices today switched to capacitive touchscreens. However, the service works in applications and games very well - only the "rickety feeling" the 'click' on the screen remains.

Uncomfortable, I also think that Nintendo a proprietary connector used - which requires a special adapter. A USB mini or micro connector would be significantly more useful and would also transferring data between PC and 3DS allow. Although there are USB cable to 3DS as usual USB chargers, however, a very different power output than the Nintendo machine could cause damage and is not recommended.

The camera is hardly worth talking about, and to use to the interaction in applications for nothing - but this is no more difficult and dangerous big disadvantage since you his smartphone camera.

The sound quality is also nothing special - but fine. Better you should expect only dedicated speakers.
However, the 3.5 mm jack port is a bit weak in the chest, who is using normal headphones has no problems - if you operate headphones with high impedance (Studio headphones) in mind, however, want to stay this turned also fully somewhat quietly.
The connection, however, is perfectly centered (which was apparently not yet the case) down and interfere in no way - something that most handhelds hitherto always botched.

Buttons and other controls function reliably and pleasant. The CirclePad is a little more slippery than I would have liked - a patterned surface would be appropriate.
Generally, the new 3DS XL comfortably in your hand.

The graphics performance is clearly inferior at about Nintendo Wii level and thus modern smartphones. Unfortunately, thus no anti-aliasing is possible, which significantly enhanced picture quality would result in low resolution.

The operating system of the new 3DS has a very child-friendly and does the job - nothing special.

So much for the technology, as it is but with the gaming experience?

Here Nintendo can as always score. Although one would often want a higher resolution while playing (just as you look at more distant objects or game text reads) is generally classified as the gaming experience pretty well.
Many 3DS games are also exclusive titles (for example, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, my almost the only reason to buy), so these are very tailored to the handheld.

In short:

Who am pleased to play a couple of (3) DS exclusive title does not come around it to an acquisition.
All in all, makes the device quite fun - the weaknesses are very obvious.

At Nintendo:
Please the next model (that then probably "Super new 3DS XL 64" is ...) the following improvements:

- Four times the resolution (so "old" 3DS games can be displayed without interpolation)
- USB Type-C plug
- Capacitative touchscreen
- Handier Circle Pad
- Video Chat Software
