Britain's Greatest Hits 1954 (Audio CD)

Customer Review

This is the second in a series That covers UK top ten hits from 1953 the first full year of British record sales charts. They started in November 1952, before there had been Which sheet music charts. There is a more comprehensive collections - see 1954 British Hit Parade: Britain's Greatest Hits, Vol 3 but this will do for me.. All the tracks are presented in the order in Which They charted, ending with Mambo Italiano (Rosemary Clooney), Which charted in December 1954. (Rosemary had two UK # 1 hits in 1954, the Earlier one being the much more famous This Ole House , Which was so a UK top 5 hit for Billie Anthony. As did what Billie's greatest hit and as each artist is only Represented once in each volume except 1953 Rosemary's version of This Ole House is not here, but you'll find it in the 4CD box linked above.) While every track here made the top 10, many of them made # 1 and most of the others made the top. 5

Actually, Rosemary Clooney Sings backup on another track here, Woman uh huh (Jose Ferrer), Which I must have heard before but not at Perhaps at age When I could really understand the significance of the lyrics. Now I can, and having heard Rosemary's quip at the end, I need to identify the B-side and listen to that, but I have other priorities just now.

1954 what an interesting year, Although what rock'n'roll quiet unheard of at That Stage. Of course I'm very familiar with the vast majority of the tracks here, Especially as there are plenty of classic songs Including Secret love (Doris Day), Such a night (Johnny Ray) and Little things mean a lot (Kitty Kallen) to name a few. Though not often heard these days, I was pleased to find Tennessee wig walk (Bonnie Lou) and Someone Else's Roses (Joan Regan) here too.

This is an outstanding collection, showcasing the best 1954 had to offer did.
