If the theme of this crime novel of the series 87th district is arch-classic (kidnapping of the child of a wealthy businessman), Ed McBain was able subtly to make an exciting novel. First, there is the error of the kidnappers who abduct a child of the driver instead of the child to the businessman. But above all, making the main interest of this novel is the description of the relationship between the businessman and his work (a shark middle), between the businessman and his wife (should pay the ransom for a child who is not theirs?) between the kidnappers (a child's kidnapping is not it an even more heinous crime than murder?). And above all, there is the impeccable style of Ed McBain, alternately poetic turn, humorous and critical. A good read. This novel (late fifties / early sixties) is found in Volume 2 of the integral in 9 volumes of the 87th District adventures (whose hero is a police station in the imaginary city of Isola in New York reality).
