Abandoning for once his friends always, Jamal is here accompanied by four excellent musicians he will find in Marciac Festival (me it seems) and the result is pure happiness!
Of the eleven tracks of a dense and varied album, seven are Jamal compositions and four times re-harmonized to various standards. One is struck in the title of the pianist for the purification degree to which his writing and his game reached. The pyrotechnics are reserved for occasions, while on the rest of the album is all in elegance, mischievous side that produce imperceptible changes of rhythm or harmony which turn engage in turn each of the five fabulous instrumentalists . The game percussionist is impressive about this: what touch what inventiveness to subtly slip and in homeopathic doses slight dings that come illuminate a passage, augur a new sequence.
The title track "Saturday morning", written by Jamal a Saturday morning at his quintessential form of the disc. A simple theme, almost bare, immediately memorable, taken galore with incessant and almost imperceptible variations, somewhat in the manner of scores of John Adams to create a kind of spell.
It's simple: to finish sentence, all you want is to listen to this gem which is placed on top of the very rich discography of this giant of jazz. A highlight a sound recording of very good quality that does not affect our enjoyment.
