The author wants to avoid Manichaeism of saying that the Nazi SS were certainly wicked strong but had apologized and that if one situates their action in France in the overall history of the 2nd World War, the balance restored between the horrors committed by the belligerents on both sides. The book was written in the early 1980s and the conscience of the Holocaust is completely absent from the book. Not a word about the killing of 6 million Jews to Nazism gives the signature of absolute evil.
