You discover the funk, you do not know where to begin. This is book is for you. From 1950 to the present day, this book condenses 50 years of black American music history, stopping on the most emblematic figures (James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, George Clinton, The Meters, Stax, Motown, etc.). The political, social and cultural context is discussed in each period. A visit to "surface" of course, but well documented. References to the inevitable "Sweet Soul Music" by Peter Guralnick are numerous. The book is well decorated with drawings "funky" that enhance the writing, sometimes fishing by a lack of style. To top it all, the book is accompanied by a CD compiling some big names funk. The selection remains, in my opinion, questionable and is ultimately very representative ... But hey, it's the thought that counts. If this book unpretentious makes you want to dig deeper, it will have served its purpose.
