The beginning of the story I loved. We follow Samantha, an American living in England. She accompanies her boyfriend while working doctor and Sam try to care. This is by purchasing a book of poems that his quiet holiday will turn into a true treasure hunt. Indeed, Samantha discovers a letter from Jane Austen, hidden between the pages of his book. The letter refers to a lost manuscript (or stolen?) And the young woman sets off to find immediately. His quest will lead up to the home Anthony, owner of a castle where Miss Austen would have stayed ... and lost the secret manuscript!
We have a novel inside the novel. When Samantha and Anthony discovers the manuscript (not spoile too, all this is happening from the beginning), we leave them to follow Rebecca, the heroine of the book unknown. I expected to love this story in the vein of those Jane Austen unfortunately impossible to get into the story. Although Syria James met the codes and style of the famous novelist, I immediately felt the difference. Unlike "Pride and Prejudice" and "Persuasion" I was not carried away by the story. I have no explanation, yet the writing is pleasant, but also the characters despite that, I remained very foreign to the story.
Occasionally, Syria abandons Rebecca James to concentrate on the characters of this: Sam and Anthony. Thus we see their relationship evolve over playback. I liked this idea of nest two stories, but as I said above, the novel of the past does not interest me as much as the history of the present. I would have preferred that the two sides are more balanced or three quarters of the book tells the story of Rebecca.
In short, I expected to devour this book but did not mayonnaise. Some readers may say that it was not the right time. That may be why, or because in my subconscious, I immediately realized that the history of Stanhope well be inspired by Jane Austen notes, we are far from the masterpieces of the author. In any case, if the novel tries you, I encourage you to find out and make your own opinion!
