Dakia, Algiers Daughter (Paperback)

Customer Review

This is absolutely not my kind of reading. Generally I avoid anything that approaches the biographies and autobiographies. That's why I put some time before reading this book you gave me when I was still in college. Fortunately, I fell across it this weekend! As soon as I started I could not stop reading, result: he was not even finished in an hour.

It is a book full of emotions. I do not deny that I had tears in his eyes more than once. The story is so poignant and touching. I was really caught by this novel. It is presented as the diary of a young Algerian, Dakia living this troubled time. Thus we read of the children of words which, in my case, me even more involved in the story. I felt very close to the narrator, I wish I could do something for her. His distress was quite understandable and yet we are powerless to help because there is ultimately no real solution.

We see through his eyes a difficult situation even awful, do not mince words. Muslim fundamentalists want to impose their vision of the world to the rest of the country, especially women who would then be reduced to mere wives and mothers. This testimony shows how a "minority" can inspire terror in the rest of the country by the violence of their actions. A violence that is present and described without being too detailed. It is above all a book written by a teenager with other teens.

This book also shows that Muslims do not have the same conception of religion. The Dakia parents, for example, want nothing to impose their daughters and fight against the veil, just the opposite of the Armed Islamic Group. Reading this novel reminds that we should not put all Muslims (but it works with all religions!) In "one basket."

In the end, this is a play that simply enchanted me. The topic is however not really happy, but it's a very informative read. I discovered a lot about the Muslim religion and on a conflict that is not that old. I have only one regret, it is not known what became Dakia (as I hope it does exist and that it was she who wrote the book!). I am very attached to this girl and I wish I knew what she did next.
