This is an exciting and mature work: the author has made a real research work for several years, and although we perceive reading the richness of what he has compiled. The main interest of this book is that it does not just say "such a symbol refers to that aspect": there is a genuine historical research, which plunges us into the Indian and Tibetan cultures pre and post Buddhist. We understand how objects and the most daily habits, superstitions, myths and the surrounding religions (Hinduism, Bon), were used to support the Buddhist symbolism. The author describes some of us even artistic techniques (eg the manufacture of stones "Zi", or composition of vermilion powder still used today by the Indians). In short, it is a mine of information, which perfectly explains the genesis of Buddhist symbols, and for understanding everything we have ever wanted to know when entering a Tibetan temple but were afraid to ask!
