I must admit that I have a complicated history with this album, because I bought several versions, the CD version of the SACD release (the box was empty ...> _
Anyway I hesitated, then I ordered the reissue of Premonition Records because I ordered Café Blue (which is simply amazing) in the same series.
In fact I found this slightly disappointing album in this edition. The quality of pressing is very good, and the instruments are very well presented, there has been a remastering that showcases the disk of a more modern way, but sibilance and particularly the voice of Patricia Barber are "hard "almost painful. I double checked my cell and controlled the problem with the other albums I PB vinyl (Café Blue, Smash Fortnight in France and Nightclub) there has a slight shine in all its sibilance his recordings, but on this version of Modern Cool the problem is particularly obvious.
It has the same brightness on the cymbals and some guitar passages, so a problem with the mastering. This does not detract from the quality of the album, it remains excellent, and overall (slightly) better than CD. The other album I of this series in Premonition Records (Café Blue) does not have this problem.
PS - I return to this review to clarify that if I put 3 stars is because I believe that a disc that costs more than 50 euros must be flawless. On the other hand I point qeue the problem is more or less marked according to the faces of the album. Thus the third face is totally free of any trace of hardness (it is remarkable).
PS 2 - (and irrelevant) - Since I compared several versions on vinyl, SACD, and CD (I have not listened to the Blu-ray version of Modern Cool) securities Patricia Barber, I note that MFSL vinyl albums and SACD are somewhat "soft" or "analog" than other versions I could compare. In the current offer, I would recommend the new edition of "Blue Café" on Premonition Records (extraordinary) and MFSL edition of "Smash", which I think is one of the best albums of PB and takes all its flavor over Listens .
Well, happy New Year to all and good music.
