The Marquesas - the original Collection (CD)

Customer Review

That was a long time friend that Brel had not spoken to him ... Since the musical "Man of La Mancha" and the album "Coming", the Belgian singer had decided, after s be briefly dedicated to cinema, to live more freely indulging in a quieter existence. That's why he took up residence on the Marquesas Islands at the end of the world and away from everything, in full possession of its new acquisitions: a sailboat and a small personal aircraft ...
But his love of writing never disappeared, and in 1977 he returned to Paris to record new songs: it will be "Les Marquises" will, dark and wonderful album with twelve compositions equally funky as each other (with the exception of "Flamingants" which contrasts somewhat with the general perfection).
Brel has lost a lung, but his suffering Brel song is more beautiful and more vibrant than ever, and his lyrics are sky high: semi-protest songs ("Jaurès", "Flamingants the" love songs (the unforgettable " Orly "and" Jojo "farewell to a friend), poetic and complex compositions (" The city slept, "" Les Marquises ") and even humorous (" The walls of Warsaw, "" The Lion "). .. But death also hovers over this dark album with "Aging" of course, "See a friend cry" and to some extent "God" ...
The arrangements are varied: from simple acoustic guitar to saxophone, piano at the battery through the accordion, "Les Marquises" proves a modern album, which even today has not aged , unlike the very first record Brel.
What can I say more: buy this masterpiece and enjoy yourself, because words are not enough to describe all he can clear ... This is the last but perhaps the best Brel. (And then prefer this original edition, just for the beauty of the cover!)
