Rise of Nations - Rise of Legends (CD-ROM)

Customer Review

The predecessor - Rise of Nations - was in my eyes an absolute highlight in the RTS genre, because it was not only developed in graphic form but equal stacks of new and meaningful comfort and game element introduced. Unfortunately, the game never got the attention then for example got the rather unninovative AoE 3. Too Bad.

Now there is a successor, who surprised with a Fantasieszenarie first, but Ron was a typical historical strategy game. What is wrong skeptical at the beginning, but is very fast convincing: since Starcraft has managed no more game developers, so so convincingly designed to incorporate different peoples in a game. All 3 have different settings: technology at the Vinci, Alin magic in, Mystery at the Cuotl. Buildings and units look radically different, no colorful dyed pabulum like other RTS games. The backstory takes you to the developers very quickly, the created world never seems implausible and you can really nice "dive".

This is also due to the spectacular audiovisual presentation of RoL. Technically sound crashes and bangs it in every nook and cranny, from the Vinci factories hear metal banging noises and steam. The area shown is very close to reality, with canyons, mountains and beautifully presented and strategically usable height differences. The cities are very much represented more impressive than in the predecessor, also agree the proportions.

Playful Ensemble has known from the predecessor, World Conquest mode turn-based strategy based a mixed story, but it has continued all freedom of action and can after several implementation scenarios freely decide where to attack and what provinces you want to expand. Only about playing people can not freely choose to, you learn the Alin and Cuotl unfortunately only in the game "know" and must first entwurschteln the civil war problem in Vinci. The battles themselves are even more varied than the predecessors, in some scenarios, there is the classic "conquer the capital of the enemy" principle, in others it is necessary supply lines for allies freizukämpfen.

From the gameplay here is RoL - like its predecessor - also slightly different: instead of the usual in other RTS games "pinprick attacks" form along existing in the game area boundaries quickly fiercely-fought fronts on which the balance of hostile forces back and herwogt. At the same time you have to take care of the cities, to strengthen them and ensure the supply units of troops and replenishment. There is plenty to do, along with numerous expansion options, inventions etc., which cause RoL is pleasantly complex, without being frustrating. The mix of turn-based and RTS works, In addition, the pure real-time scenarios, refreshing play differently and have a depth of gameplay that you miss in click-orgies such as C + C and you would have liked to apply in AoE III.

All in all, a brilliant RoL, partly innovative RTS that by now 3 patches with me absolutely stable and runs smoothly, despite dream graphics. A smooth 1 for it and hope that also in the German "trade press" (if you can call it that) finally the right attention for RoL is developed.
