Musically better one would have the 40th Bandjubliäum my opinion can not celebrate. Whoever groundbreaking and pioneering the band's hits like "Heart of Glass" - the New Wave ode to Kraftwerk or "Rapture", no not the first white rapper Eminem was, but Debbie! - Expected I have to disappoint you. But that you may not expect, the band the current zeitgeist reflected here with her retro pop anyway well again. Blondie have a greater impact on the music industry with its bold style mixes with respect as the way its 40 million worldwide album sales. Logically then came indeed in 2006, the inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in particular Debbie Harry's influence on self-determined women in pop business who actually write their own songs, are extremely attractive and also not allowed to be intelligent, reflected in later works of Madonna on Gwen Stefani until today to Lady Gaga again.
Now do not want to digress: Supported Debbie and Co. this time paired cooler of some underground artists like Los Raka and the Colombian hip-hop group "Systema Solar" wonderful here the vocal combination Debbies eroticism with the absolutely-positively and macho-defying rap parts of the male counterparts. Absolute highlights for me: The opener "Sugar On The Side", "I Screwed Up" and Debbie's duet with Gossip frontwoman Beth Ditto in "A Rose by Any Name" absolutely suitable for clubs and with proper promotion it could also again an Airplay -Hit for the band are. Then the top-Pops in the form of Blondies cover version of Frankie Goes-To-Hollywood classic "Relax". Legend Covert legend that may the :-). For a couple of reviewers before me this cover seemed to be absolutely superfluous. It seems to me the selection downright awesome! The know Blondie connoisseurs among us, that the band had placed at least one brilliant punk cover of 60s girl group or by Buddy Holly on each album prior to its long-standing separation.
Why then the absolute 80s cliché-gay anthem "Relax" by FGTH ?? Simply because the realization of this idea is brilliant: With Blondie, it starts as a power ballad by and goes later in the usual-soaked Trevor Horn bombast about aesthetics, supported with Debbie's wonderful vocals and some featurettes. In this "Wall of Sound" Blondie lay still great value in their productions, as then "FGTH" and the consensus of "Relax" (probably stone me some after this statement, but no matter :-)) corresponds exactly to the spirit of Blondies attitude to artistic freedom and her love for New York.
The "Greatest Hits Redux" can be enjoyed wonderful. Did I fear a 1 in advance: to make 1-reinterpretation of the old classics, this seems to me now as totally unfounded, since Debbie's mature voice sounds wonderfully smoky with the admissions, yet compared to the originals absolutely no boredom. I especially like the new interpretation of "The Tide Is High". For the DVD "Live at CBGB" I'm going to write anything, because I'll be looking at those still at rest ... all in all, I forgive round five stars for this wonderful Jubilee and can not wait that my dream finally come true is and I can see the band in July for the first time live! ... Here is the absolute interface and quintessence Blondies work before!
