And for a movie of almost epic proportions (Yardage almost 2 1/2 hours), which presents a places incredible imagery and consistently great acting performances, you need more and definitely something different than the conventional score with full orchestra ....
And what Trent Reznor (David Fincher's "The Social Network") and Atticus Ross ("The Book of Eli") release here on our hearing - is exactly !!!!
Both take us into a world of sound that captures us really - this is truly not an easy listening enjoyment, full Disonanzen and atonal soundscapes .... and yet fantastically hypnotic.
As the film draws us the score slowly but surely into a just seemingly perfect world down that deeply degenerate, dark and full of terrible secrets ....
And on top of that he is a foray into the film music history: Everywhere you meet while listening to familiar motifs.
The detuned piano sounds reminiscent of the early Ennio Morricone, and the strange melodies of this instrument can remember a sometimes to Howard Shore's score for David Fincher's masterful "The Game" with Michael Douglas ....
The late John Carpenter confronts us with some more rhythmic sequences and leaves "The Prince of Darkness - The Prince of Darkness" rise again ....
The countless spherical moments lead us the work of Tangerine Dream from the early 70s again before ears .... Electronic sounds that seem to be out of this world ....
All of this is embedded in a sound and soundscape, which is uncomfortable, cold and awesome .... and seems to have its origins in Wendy Carlos' work on Stanley Kubrick's landmark "The Shining" (which is, however, unfortunately, can only know if If these rare 2-CD special edition to the rejected by Kubrick Carlos score to "The Shining" its own calls ....).
But Reznor and Ross copy or quote - they might have picked up one or the other idea, but created their very own masterpiece !!!!
And not forgetting the magnificent cover versions, two in number: Jimmy Page's "Immigrant Song" and Bryan Ferry's "Is Your Love Strong Enough" ....
The first hard and almost gruff and in conjunction with the opening credits a hammer - and the Second uncredited even more perfect than the original ....
About headphones evening belongs in the dark takes us this score in a bleak world from which there will be no escape and no turning back ....
An echosounder and sophisticated masterpiece that spread us here in full is offered on 3 CD's - and heard in any decent score Collection.
Again: It's definitely not everyone's taste, but who gets involved it will be rewarded with something extraordinary ....
An absolute recommendation !!!!
