John Williams is undoubtedly the most brilliant film composer (perhaps one of the best reputable composers) of our time; 40 Oscar nominations speak volumes! And he proves impressively with his third, and probably unfortunately last, Harry Potter Soundtrack. No one but John Williams can be something wonderful and innovative magic out of his hat, and with 72! Once again he manages to perfectly translate the world of Harry Potter in music, in such perfect that you do not notice that the individual pieces are synchronized to a film. John Williams takes us even in corners of the Potter universe that were previously undetected; the music for the dementors bringing a sombre element, and in total it can be said that the whole score has a medieval touch. This can hear especially in "Change of Seasons" and "A Window To The Past". Thematically never lets us hang Williams anyway, and "The Prisoner of Azkaban" is no exception. On the contrary: the new subject of the film, "A Window To The Past", played by magical flute is by far the most magical thing offered us Williams previously. The most medieval piece is here "Double Trouble", which argues with "Window To The Past" to the role of the main subject. Sung by a children's choir, it accompanies the start of the third year at Hogwarts.
Special mention deserves "Buckbeak's Flight", which represents the culmination of the previous Potter films, no doubt; a stunning violin motif, the rolling timpani, swirling strings and playful woodwinds, the perfect set accents exude a dynamic that is sure to capture your heart higher. The icing on the cake are such wonderful, non-thematic pieces like "Aunt Marge's Waltz", a real highlight at the outset, or "The Knight Bus," which strikes a jazzy direction. The only negative thing about the soundtrack is the final pieces "Mischief Managed" which is just a compilation of the best moments of the CD basically. This place could have been better use. In summary, one can say with a clear conscience that "the Prisoner of Azkaban" not only the best-ever Harry Potter Soundtrack is, but also of my opinion the best soundtrack of the year. It is beyond me why John Williams so often can pass at the Oscars. 5 winnings of 43 nominations, this is a joke, considering the talent of this man.
