Customer Review

Last April I discovered The remains of dawn, the first novel of a promising author. Oh joy! David S.Khara again with a historical thriller conspirator panting and disheveled.
With a fast first flashback, but effective, the author sends us straight to a camp in Poland in 1942. It is not there to laugh, it is warned.
After the first change of scenery, we first met Jay Novacek, cowardly and suicidal alcoholic trader, filthy rich and living in Manhattan. Jay is a torture, cynical, and very desperate.
This is the beginning of a frantic succession of flashbacks all as crispants than each other, that would give us a reading of frustration, though the pace was not as well balanced.
We move from one era to another, from one place to another quickly enough to move the schmilblick. The reader has no time to mope. The incursions in the past are striking, they met Hess, Hitler, Himmler and other gays lads.
It is cold in the back, but can place the action in reality.
The young trader is a pathetic character, and how the world rocking the announcement of the death of the father who abandoned them 25 years earlier, his mother and himself. Our young hero will soon be sporting a close protection provided by a CIA rookie who does not look, before the meeting of a Mossad agent not convenient.
An unlikely trio, an unidentified threat, a strange and disturbing legacy of his mother, a trip to Europe, and that the trader embarked on an investigation of the most stunning, amid Nazi experiments and scientific folly.
Beyond the plot already accomplished, the characters are particularly carefully. The "hero" Jay is almost passive, it suffers the events, displays a blasé attitude, we feel that it is not out of place in this adventure in which it is driven against his will. It follows the movement as he can. However, occasionally manage to bring his skills to the resolution of the plot, but will remain dependent on those of his two acolytes. An obvious complicity quickly brings the three protagonists. We quickly a lot about one of them, but it does not spoil the suspense.
The topic background is blacker, inhumane experiments conducted by the Nazis, scientists and researchers "recovered" by various European countries in exchange for their skills, nothing very cheerful. Despite this heavy and serious context, humor is very present throughout the novel. The character of Jay / Jeremy is not devoid of black humor, he is in constant sync with its "protectors" and the serious events which succeed. The dialogues are well regarded and humorous when needed. A mix of relaxation and gravity, equity and well-executed twists.
