The reason for this compilation is a new career documentation Sum Of The Parts for which the former Genesis members have assembled, and let time pass in review. As a soundtrack to this, the set is therefore to some extent makes sense.
With compilations of individual artists but one is better off.
A halfway reasonable career overview of Genesis was already tried in 2004 with the set Platinum Collection, although there were 3 CDs already too short, since the band has produced some songs in excess length. The Platinum Collection Although not all the songs were (well partly because these instruments emphasize some different) in the latest Remixes represented, or at least all of the songs for this set were re-mastered.
For those interested in the solo work of the musicians there are some Best Of CDs by Collins, Gabriel, and even Mike & The Mechanics have recently published a new Best Of album.
By Tony Banks and Steve Hackett there is something not to my knowledge. The 3 here each offered solo songs of Hackett, Banks, Collins, Rutherford and Gabriel can give an impression of the mostly very substantial solo careers since hardly.
In addition to these 5 had the band Genesis other members, unfortunately, remain their works here considered.
The song selection is managed for the most part, still are quite a few songs handles in the toilet, for the measured total work scarce time on the 3 CDs you'd better fill and use. Take, for example only Wake Up Call from Testify album flop and the duet Easy Lover by Phil Collins. In addition, none of the songs of Peter Gabriel's greatest success has so lost on these 3 CDs, but Signal To Noise. Mike & The Mechanics' pretty much the biggest US hit All I Need Is A Miracle I miss painfully. Regarding the Mechanics only sung by Paul Carrack songs were selected.
I can not understand the decision for Back In NYC and has found why again how to Turn It On Again The Hits and The Platinum Collection, the terribly boring Hold On My Heart his way here. For Kuschelrock Group should actually Afterglow, Follow You Follow Me and The Living Years suffice. In contrast, for example, Watcher Of The Skies, or almost any other Genesis song would have been a pleasant change.
Whether Tony Banks' and Steve Hackett's solo work with these songs represented reasonable, unfortunately beyond my knowledge. At least one can say, that fit the solo songs (except for Easy Lover) well in the band songs. A highlight at the end of box sets is the Hackett song Nomads of leisurely starts with acoustic Spanish guitar and then sometime losrockt. Tony Banks' classical work at the end of Sirens is also well placed. Unfortunately, the debut Genesis From Genesis to Revelation is again left out.
A real Best Of or Greatest Hits character has no R-Kive. Rares or new can not be found. For the Genesis fan of everything already has, somehow missing the incentive to buy. This would be, for example, with a bonus DVD (the documentary appear individually), live songs, alternative versions, or an exclusive new recording (if you already have all together) can provide you with The Carpet Crawlers as then.
The stupid trying to cool titles R-Kive is misleading in this regard. Those looking for rarities of Genesis, have to buy the two boxset Archives Vol. 1 & 2.
Regarding the Genesis songs has largely taken the 2007/8-remixes / remasters. Some songs from the 80s and 90s have been put on the other hand, the old mixes, remastered is all but still. No Son Of Mine sounds in my ears, for example, again as on the original album in 1991 and not as the remix from Remaster 2007/8. Compare because only the end of the song, with the guitars and keyboards are much louder and mixed in different remix. Mama has compared to the 2007/8-Remaster and Platinum Collection also another mix or mastering another. Some forums will also be noted that the mixtures of R-Kive had better dynamics and are partially different / better mastered than on previous releases. So just with a magnifying glass I have not studied.
The cover gives his characters a face as a shadow (Sum of the Parts), but it reminds me a little of the ramekins cover from 1983 that really hates the band. The booklet provides a multi-page text about the band's career, and full-page illustrations of the Album Cover.
Conclusion:
On the songs there except for a few exceptions, little to complain about. Since you can at most about it what quarreling with only 3 CDs all missing or would have been better. Who wants to address this set with his song selection is a complete mystery to me, since it is neither as good for Best Of something new / Rares offers as an incentive. Therefore better the Platinum Collection and Best Solo Ofs buy. The Platinum Collection is not reissued apparently currently provided by the record label (intended for R-Kive) and prices rise it. More than to scarce 3 stars I can not bring myself to R-Kive.
