With "Like a Prayer" to Madonna took the lead, trumped all and was hailed as the biggest star of the 80s.
Musically shows Madonna simply size. On the one hand there is absolute pop classics as "Like a Prayer", "Express Yourself" and "Cherish", on the other hand very personal and great ballads: "Promise to Try", "Oh Father" and "Spanish Eyes". .. or there are the rather inconspicuous candidates "Till Death Do Us Part" and "Keep It Together", which gives the album its depth? Or enchanted at the end but the charming "Dear Jessy" or the wonderfully oblique "Love Song" with Prince?
"Like a Prayer" is not a concept album: It's more of an album that reflects the former Madonna perfect. Whether this is facade or a fairy tale ... I believe her. "Like a Prayer" is actually like a prayer. It goes deep under the skin. It touches ... but there is also strength and hope. For me one of the best performances of the Madonna and definitely a highlight in any music collection.
