Just has this "monstrous" 36MP sensor! The images have a truly excellent dive. And can be modulated rendered images in many ways. A treat! The HDR option works miracles in some very contrasting pictures.
Major advantage of the 36 MP can crop without much problems to post-production because there are under the hood! I advise you to work in RAW and process images with Capture NX2.
The files size is reasonable with newer computers (but not need a racing beast like computer, if you do not treat hundreds of images each time)
By cons attention to blur especially with large aperture lenses used (1.4, 1.8, 2, ..) I suggest to work 5.6 Opening with bright guy objectives 50 mm, 85 mm, 105 mm. With this sensor the slightest camera shake does not forgive. I am also given to the monopod, which also serves as my walking stick ballad.
What I like is also to have a built-in flash that can control other wireless flash. No need to buy a flash driver or transmitter. And it makes a lovely economy.
I do not sports photos, so for me 4 frames / s is more than enough. The buffer holds up. For a CF card 400 is quite sufficient though not need to ruin with faster cards.
As for what the video quality image! I'm not really a video artist, but I can save minis sequences with really amazing quality! If your resources allow you buy an external microphone!
Now the bad side is the price (even if it's cheaper than a Canon EOS 5D Mark III). I can sell many things of my equipment to offer me, but I will keep a very long time! Another negative point is the weight in running order with objectives and flash. The tote pulls the shoulders and that's not the kind of material that can carry around everywhere, because it can do attract some envious and malicious envy.
Summarizes the 24X36 sensor is a real treat. Up to 1600 ISO images are amazing and without any "grain" and in 3200 it holds up. Beyond 3200 pixel size reached its limits. I have a buddy who bought a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and frankly if you want to work with the "ISO High" or take the Canon so keep your D700 if you have one!
I use the D800 with 4 goals including 3 that I had: a 20 mm Nikon 50mm 1.8G, 1.8G a 85mm and a 105mm macro. When my finances will be awarded for that purchase the 800D I eyeing the 150 mm macro Sigma (with stabilizer), but here we will be in 2013 at least!
I sold all my equipment in APS format and to photograph "light" I took a Fuji X10. I love its retro look, the manual zoom and quality of its images (12MP). This one I can easily take over.
In summary, the D800 is a pretty nice device. I will not deny that I enjoyed myself by offering me. Compared to the D700 (which is also a great device) the D800 is actually much more "day" and makes more sharp images
If you have a D700 and the video does not interest you reflect still before changing
There will be the D700 (or 5D) on the market of the occasion and frankly there between the APS format and size 24X36 there is not - in my opinion - to hesitate for a second. I have chosen frankly camp the large sensor and I sold everything I had in the APS format, and I will not go backwards (except my Fuji X10 amuses me and is easily usable everywhere)
Voila I hope that my remarks will be helpful.
