"Controversy" is a consistently good album - less commercial than "Prince" and a little less rough than "Dirty Mind" very funk roots with influences of New Wave music, some rock and roll, soul and pop and to the course Here scary fresh genius of one-man band from Minneapolis. Particularly striking are the title track (think-offensive language - integrated "Lord's Prayer" and a rather striking punk Chant plus a groovy rhythm and a wonderful chorus), the hyper erotic ballad "Do Me, Baby" and "Annie Christian", a truly pioneering piece of musical genius. Add to that a little bit of government criticism (uncharacteristic of Prince albums) and party music between funk and rock'n'roll. A highlight of the early period of Prince.
