It is quite small and is mainly not particularly up or down beyond the plug, ie one has the same underlying socket still space to insert something else (unlike some other devices). The Raspi can power the drive on its own power, when one has however even more USB devices plugged in, you get only once problems with disconnects or even crash the device. A USB hub with its own power supply is here highly recommended. However, this is not a problem of the stick, its power consumption is probably "normal", but the Raspberry Pi.
The range could be further, it is simply unacceptable and not particularly stunning. That should not be surprised, however, at a such a small stick (and thus smaller antenna).
