How something can fail, you can listen to "Anyone Can Play Radiohead", which was released quite a few years ago and was mainly to prove that just can not play any Radiohead ...
(1) On this album you try it with "No Surprises" as an opener, which provides an introduction to the album okayen. Although the use electronic sounds act instead of the usual xylophone, together with the floating-soulful presentation and slightly distorted male voice very unusual, but with the purpose of the woman's voice coming from the middle of the song he seems in effect quite ok.
(2) The first major highlight of the album, however, is quite clear "Morning Bell" that with a very sophisticated, trip-hop packing operations can score. Quite unusual, but sounds damn cool and is somewhat reminiscent of good "Portishead" or "Lamb" times. Class!
(3) Unfortunately, since not keep up "In Limbo", because you have been around the same to do here with the first really big failure. The electronic sounds used are too intrusive and extremely annoying, the sugar-sweet duet singing is extremely inappropriate, which is lost in the Mysterious original sound without something interesting new offer. Unfortunately, a complete mistake!
(4) Fortunately, followed by a skilful "High & Dry", which comes across extremely soulful and has a fantastic memorable voice. The cover looks very autonomously by the strong groove, without that it would no longer sound like the original. Good ambient song.
(5) A further highlight and one of the best songs on the album but that is probably already well-known "Just", which is presented in an extremely ingenious radio version. Everything is just right, also is the eingängiste number of the album. No wonder then that the song was very successful released as a single.
(6) In sharp contrast is the following "safety valve", that will be presented in a fully electronic instrumental version. The song affects not just engaging in the first Hörgängen by pretty squeaky intro, but I have to say that it has evolved over time and something, especially in the middle part. But could easily have be better produced.
(7) The following "Nice Dream" is once again produced very cautious and reminds equivalent sharply above-mentioned trip-hop with simultaneous chanson influences. However, the song is not as strong as "Morning Bell" and very well.
(8) "Blow Out" but then again follows a major highlight, the readily as single could be extracted. When sound structure although has hardly changed anything (except that here a woman sings), but above all, knows the leisurely increasing the intensity very pleasing, compared to the original grungig held. For me personally, even provides the cover an improvement!
(9) Again, very groovy and sexy (!) There is the following "The National Anthem". Like the original, the clear bass line is in the foreground, to the song mutates promptly from the half to an experimental jazz orgy with saxophones and bass stolperndem. The (once again) female voice sings very cautious and ... suggestively. Brilliant!
(10) The biggest disappointment of the album is for me then "Karma Police" is that I was hoping for a lot to me. Unfortunately, it was decided to make the song an avant-garde jazz zerbechlichen number that then also there tormenting to about 7 minutes. That does not fit, especially since it has become an instrumental version (!) And thus of important and ingenious text does not come into play. An absolute, horrible nadir ...
(11) However, it is equally compensated it with the best interpretation of a Radiohead songs I've ever heard. "Paranoid Android" was revised here in an extremely melancholy and poignant version that is played only with piano and two cellos and presented by an incredibly fragile female voice that is strongly reminiscent of Tori Amos. Though lacking the dramatic part of the original, this one experiences here a very menacing mood. Absolute madness! I immediately got goosebumps ... If at the same stage of the original!
(12) This high standard is then also held with the fantastic "Everything In Its Right Place". Acts of early still relatively equivalent, this version trumps after the first third of a sudden flood of departure from the straight dance beat to Brazilian drums and percussions (!). What so actually anmutet completely impossible, but just sounds bombastic! An incredibly creative implementation, you felt as if carnival celebrated in Rio with Radiohead on a trolley case.
(13) The album breathes then again with "Knives Out" a decent dash Soul, which was relatively well-produced, especially the chorus was well implemented. Despite a fairly weak compared to the other songs.
(14) again all the stops are pulled to completion and then heavily modified and spread to 7 minutes version of "Exit Music" played, beginning with a harmonium, take up guitar, piano and drums. I was the first ear canal absolutely not realize that there should be at "Exit Music", until the last minute revealed quasi the original. A song that takes several passes, but then is very strong.
As a conclusion it can be said that the album is worth in any case and it is in contrast to the previous experiment mentioned extremely successful, even though a couple of dropouts and mediocre versions are included. However, you need to be sure that the cover versions were produced very jazzy and soulful to a predominant part.
The idea of implementation but consistently creative and overall you can say that one of the album extremely interesting and new aspects about the sound aesthetic of Radiohead songs are made audible.
Most of all, the interpretation of "Morning Bell", "Just", "Blow Out", "The National Anthem", "Everything In It's Right Place", "Exit Music", and especially "Paranoid Android" should be missed by no means!
Therefore very good 4 stars ...
