Fahrenheit 451 (Paperback)

Customer Review

"Book Burning" comes from the Portuguese: "auto da fé", which means "leap of faith" in an inquisitorial environment.

The world described by Bardbury also takes him to the modern Inquisition, except that the oppressed are not the Christian heretics but the books and their readers. The book is culture, memory, doubt, depth, emotion, suffering, revolt, the questioning of the system; that's what Night inside the machine, and what needs to be burned. Firefighters extinguished the fires of the past, now they provoke, but also to extinguish a fire power: the thought.

In the near future drowned in a stuffy and sterile happiness, discreetly totalitarian, technological and controlled by the media, the fireman Montag is going through a severe crisis of conscience and become a hunted criminal. His crime: wanting to rediscover the book, and all that makes human dignity. This discovery will obviously make him lose everything and rank it among the "terrorists."

A famous dystopia which, without reaching the dizzying scale of 1984 and even a Brave New World, is particularly distressing, involved. It is primarily one of the most beautiful declarations of love to the immemorial ink, but also a subtle questioning of the concept of happiness, as is already in Brave New World: the man will end Does it preferring happiness at the thought? The amnesiac contentment culture and memory? This is the central question of the work, and the answer appears implicit in a virtuoso end, casts some optimism.
