The menu is clearly structured and not overloaded with features and gadgets. For owners of other Sony models that's not a problem for newcomers, there is a brief description, which is well suited to become quickly familiar with the camera.
The camera offers Easy Auto Mode and Smart Auto, which is ideal, especially for beginners.
Much of the functionality is controlled by the Intelligent Auto that recognizes many different shooting situations, such as macro.
The Smart Auto also supports automatic face detection, a setting for Smile Sensitivity, Advanced Scene Detection and the adjustment both for some color variants as well as the single and continuous shooting. The continuous shooting function is very convenient when taking pictures of fast moving subjects such as children, animals or sport activities.
In the Programmed Auto ISO values (80-3200), white balance, exposure compensation via the menu controllable.
Image Size: There are settings in VGA with a small image size for e-mail attachment, 15M, 2M in 16.9 format for playback on HDTV and 5, 10, and 20MP.
The built-in flash can be switched on or off by control button. And well I find the dial-in scene mode with high ISO sensitivity App for shots in dark locations.
The video function in cameras only plays a minor role for me. But with this camera I'm pleasantly surprised about the quality of video recordings in HD. There is no blur and no camera shake. For even more freedom of movement while filming the Optical Active Mode option ensures (SteadyShot). The autofocus and image stabilizer make this a really good job.
The Panorama shooting mode (Standard, Wide, 360 °) is also available. The transitions from panoramic images are fluent, confident image quality. The quality of the images is detailed and rich in contrast with very good lighting conditions. The colors are rich and natural.
Only in low light conditions or when shooting at night comes the Sony DSC-W830 to its limits.
Seriously, it's just very inexpensive. If you have higher standards, you just have to grab a better digicam.
For everyday use and for both beginners and beginners it is absolutely recommendable!
