Two stories succeed in this book: The blonde lady and the Jewish lamp. Grappling, both opponents are Lupin and Holmes. Lupin always one step ahead of Holmes as it requires to work on his land. But that's not counting the skill of English detective who always manages to untangle the skein of the gentleman thief, but often a bit too late or so without obtaining a total victory. Maurice Leblanc, parodying the Conan Doyle detective does not make a victim of Lupin Lupin but nevertheless remains the strongest and has the last word. Conan Doyle was shown a bit annoyed by the resumption of his character in the Sherlock Holmes traits, dreading more than anything he eventually ridicule. But Lupin has great respect and admiration for the English detective. Therefore, to win the game, it is he who leads the game, forcing Shears adapt to its rules. This is the only solution for him to beat the English and besides, he tells him, otherwise he would be lost.
