Two options presented themselves to the coup Laika. Either tap into the huge repertoire of love songs (especially if they are nostalgic) that litter the history of vocal jazz either write his own lyrics. It is overwhelming that the singer has used the first option, allying to itself the way the assistance of Gil Goldstein for rearrangements.
All this is very well written, haunted by the ubiquitous trumpet harmonies of Akinmusire (still!) And Rou Hargrove (flugelhorn). Generally, the instrumentalists are also excellent and there is not the question.
In fact, the real limit of this disc is its total uniformity. Eleven titles identical style, incredibly slow rhythms, accompaniments are alike and a voice, warm and sensual of course, but only operates in an extremely restricted range and sounds - sometimes - faux limit when it comes rising. So we feel the technical limits of Laika even if, overall, it all sounds good. But trouble lurks due to monotony or excessive securities that eventually look like.
In all, more a disappointment than a discovery (but it is true that my attendance jazz makes me very demanding ...).
