I buy many years Jim Murray's books, because our tastes seem to be quite similar. That one himself must worry if you are looking at a guide for whiskey is probably clear to everyone. Personally, I can only recommend Jim Murray to consult in retrospect once to see whether their own flavor to the matches of him, ideally with several whiskeys. Why now a Japanese this year at No. 1 or not, I can say nothing. I do not personally care because I do not drink in this price class, neither in this nor in previous years. Some of the reviews of this book read here as if this is the reason why this book would be poor. Just the 15 take in hand (it costs only about half an bottle of whiskey) and try it. I often teach to JM when I buy new whiskeys. In more cases than not I agree with him to tend.
