I meet regularly and deaf i found lots of elements regularly evoked by the Deaf community in this book.
Véronique reminds us that this is in 1977 that the situation began to evolve in France then than before the deaf were sometimes considered mentally disabled.
It explains the French sign language whose sentences are not structured as loral (so that if the dull writing a text message with the words placed as in LSF (sign language), this does not mean much and must be "read".
She exhibits her daily denfant with hearing raised in a family where many are Deaf (uncle, aunt), she tells us about the "side benefits" that allow to have "benefits" when nentendent not relatives (ah, put loud music in his room without getting play!).
The deaf community, sign language are almost a world apart. A deaf does not include figuratively ("After rain or shine" is a phrase taken the first direction by a deaf), has not the same humor (there are jokes "Pi deaf" (which rarely laugh hearing). A low difficulty expressing his feelings verbally, (because this is abstract) but look at his body, his gestures, his expressions and you have all the range of emotions. The LSF is expressive, each element has its place in this that "tells" the deaf and the most important person is first. I learn this language for more than ten years and I find it beautiful.
Véronique Foal between revolt and difficult understanding has learned to love his parents and be proud of them and their journey.
This book is a good approach of a family situation where each other not hear. This is not off-putting, it reads alone, this is nice
